We observed cooler surface seawater temperatures #SST during the 2026 deployment of the M2 mooring in the #BeringSea. 🧪🌊🦑🛟

Project Mooring site M2 in the southeastern Bering Sea is led by the Ecosystems and Fisheries Oceanography Coordinated Investigations (EcoFOCI) program at the NOAA Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory (PMEL). The University of Alaska Fairbanks Ocean Acidification Research Center (UAF OARC) partners with EcoFOCI to add sensors to observe seawater carbon dioxide to detect ocean acidification at M2. Figures The top panel shows observations of the difference in the partial pressure of carbon dioxide (ΔpCO₂) between one meter above the sea-air interface and one meter below the sea-air interface. A negative value indicates the seawater pCO₂ is lower than air, and the site is a carbon dioxide sink to the atmosphere. A positive value indicates the seawater pCO₂ is higher than air, and the site is a carbon dioxide source (shaded area) to the atmosphere. The bottom panel is seawater temperature, observed by a seaCAT sensor moored one meter below the sea-air interface. The dark black line is the site average, the gray lines are the final and archived data from previous deployments (i.e. 2011-2025), and the blue dots are the 3-hour, raw data from the current deployment. All 2026 data are preliminary. 2026 At the time M2 was deployed on May 7, 2026, the spring bloom had begun and ΔpCO₂ was -240 μatm. The surface buoy was recovered on August 11, 2026, and the seasonal drawdown associated with primary productivity was lessening and ΔpCO₂ was returning to near zero (when the seawater pCO₂ and atmospheric pCO₂ are in equilibrium). Overall, seawater temperatures were below average, with seawater at 0.3 degree C at the time of deployment. The 2025-2026 winter was a relatively high sea ice year, relative to the last decade.
