I believe some have reacted in disbelief to hearing the UK across summer had an average temperature of 16.5C and this was sufficient to make it the hottest summer on record. The average T treats the overnight low and max equally, so it will not feel representative. (1/2)

Hi all, I'm currently in Amsterdam, that's why I've gone quiet! I can still announce #London Heathrow, unsurprisingly with average temperature of 21.5C experienced its hottest summer on record. A remarkable +3.4C above already warmed 1991-2020 climo and over 1 degree warmer than 2nd hottest 2018.

Warmest May-Aug at London Heathrow (avg max temp) 🥇 2026: 25.95C (assuming Aug finishes 27.5C) 🥈 2018: 24.45C 🥉 2022: 24.40C 2025: 24.38C 1976: 24.12C Pretty extraordinary since May 1st, London has averaged a high of 26C which is 1.5C higher than previous hottest in 2018.

A sweltering start to September in southern Europe peaks of 40-43C are expected in Spain on Thursday. The weather has turned more unsettled in late August in NW Europe but we are far from out woods yet. Immense heat is near the Earth is exceptionally warm.

It wasn’t as cool as you think the max of 21.4C just 0.7C below normal high for the date. Tomorrow will be 80th consecutive day since #London Heathrow last had a daily max below 20C. Seems clear we will break 2022 record of 85 consecutive days. The longest streak in 1976 summer 39 days!

I keeping hearing talk about a September heatwave it bears no truth. A July-like heatwave will take hold across S half of Europe next week but for UK we look to maintain a flat westerly profile. Likely turning more settled further south but no high temps are expected. Nights will be most mild.

feels like London has taken a different climate classification in recent months. Even on this more unsettled blustery day still getting dregs the proper rain keeps going north or south. I’ve seen only 3mm since midnight locally most of models indicated 10mm+ 😶 (1/2)

Wet weather will be focused on south tomorrow where it has largely evaded as Atlantic low passes through. The frontal rain looks to start near 10am in London a push back from earlier guidance. Following the more persistent rain a feature with heavy rain also looks to sweep east later in afternoon.

The London storm/weather shield remains in excellent order the Midlands lit up like a Christmas tree. ⚡️ For such a hot summer to produce nothing is twisted. Apart from one active overnight storms in June it has been crickets. (1/2)

2026 is running very hot we saw January open up uneventful as ranked 31st warmest of the 79 Januaries (1948-present). January 2026 (31/79) February 2026 (3/79) March 2026 (7/79) April 2026 (5/79) May 2026 (1/79) June 2026 (1/79 July 2026 (1/79) August 2026 (1*/79) London Heathrow data…

I am anticipating August 2026 will be record warm August in London, 2022 holds it for now which slightly edged out 1995. It would be the fourth consecutive record-breaking month which started in May. Truly unprecedented these past few months, nothing comes close in persistence and magnitude.

A reminder of our very fragile existence. I said it during Blatten glacier collapse last year a devastating event like this would come sooner rather than later. Rocketing global temperatures, loss of high elevation permafrost/glacial ice the glue which holds it together is being lost. (1/2)

A massive flash flood in the Himalayan border areas of Nepal and ‌China's Tibet. Initial report say it may have been caused by a glacial lake rupture.

V warm and muggy tomo expecting high twenties 🥵 Heavy showers are expected to break out late morning near London more to north involving Midlands moving NW. Capable of producing intense rainfall and ⚡️ big uncertainty on whether more scattered or part of something more organised and widespread.

There's growing model consensus that a broad area of heavy rain (thundery?) will push northwards across England and Wales on Thursday. The first significant rain in several months, seems the bulk of rain will have cleared early by dawn in London.
