Under low lighting and between scattered pink and purple balloons, DePaul students mirrored instructions for dancing bachata. The skill level among participants varied, but all were intent on completing the motions and having a good time.  DePaul’s Sigma Lambda Beta fraternity and Sigma Lambda Gamma sorority banded together to host their annual “Horchata y Bachata” event on Monday evening at Courtelyou Commons in DePaul’s Lincoln Park campus.

The DePaul Blue Demons (4-15 overall, 1-7 Big East) are set to face the Seton Hall Pirates (12-5 overall, 6-2 Big East) at 2 p.m. at Wintrust Arena. DePaul’s last home game was a thrilling 80-77 comeback victory over Georgetown where the Blue Demons erased two separate double-digit deficits. For Christian Groves, a Bears fan born and raised in the Chicago suburbs, this season has felt different — even if expectations remain relatively low. Groves, a DePaul senior, said he has been a Bears fan his whole life, but years of disappointment have taught him not to get his hopes up too high. “Being a Bears fan is interesting because, even though I’d always want them to win, I never really expect them to,” said Groves, a political science major.

Junior forward Jeremy Lorenz to miss remainder of season

Kate Novik earns second weekly honor roll in Big East

Junior guard Kate Novik was named to the Big East Honor Roll, the conference announced Monday. This marks the second time that the Belarus native has taken home the weekly award this season. Her first selection was on Dec. 15. In DePaul’s 80-77 win over Georgetown on Saturday, the team’s only game of the week, Novik led her squad with 19 points and 10 assists, marking her third double-double of the season.

The Chicago Bears are back

For Chicago Bears fans, the idea of playoff football has started to feel more like a memory than an expectation. That feeling shifted when the Chicago Bears hired head coach Ben Johnson prior to the 2025 campaign.  During the first few weeks of training camp, that renewed sense of hope could have easily been mistaken for delusion. Love for a team makes it more than just a game

Tony Anaya is a huge fan of the Chicago Bears, Bulls and Cubs. There are many rivals of all three teams, but Anaya says he especially hates the Green Bay Packers.  “They own us,” said Anaya, a DePaul graduate student who grew up in Chicago.  That may have been the case then, but it certainly isn’t now. This year the Bears have won two out of their three matchups against the Packers.

When I joined La DePaulia a year ago, I hardly knew anything about the publication’s history.  Our founder, Hillary Flores, created a Spanish section of The DePaulia to make sure coverage of the Latine community was done thoroughly, through times of happiness or distress. By 2022, La DePaulia shifted from a Spanish-language publication to a bilingual one to reach a wider audience.

Senior guard Kate Clarke to take medical redshirt, miss entirety of 2025-26 season

On Thursday, the DePaul women’s basketball team announced that guard Kate Clarke would forgo the remainder of the 2025-26 season due to a hand injury sustained in mid-October. She will officially redshirt what would have been her senior season. Last year, Clarke was an integral part of a DePaul squad that finished with a 13-19 record, including a 8-10 mark in Big East play.

CJ Gunn named to Big East Honor Roll for second time this season

Senior guard CJ Gunn was named to the Big East Honor Roll on Monday, making it his second time being named to the honor roll this season. His first selection was on Dec. 15.  In the two games last week against Villanova and Xavier, Gunn averaged 18.5 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and a block. In both games, he led the team in scoring.

Junior forward Jeremy Lorenz faces decision about season-ending surgery

When speaking to the media before a matchup against Georgetown, head coach Chris Holtmann said junior forward Jeremy Lorenz “is expected to be out for a while” with a hip injury.  “He’ll have a decision to make regarding surgery,” Holtmann said. “We’ll have information on that here as we move forward.” Holtmann first brought up the possibility of surgery when speaking to the media before the game against Villanova on Dec.
