AAI CEO Sheila Gilheany writes in Irish Examiner how today should have been a proud day for public health in Ireland with the introduction of health warning labels on alcohol products. Sheila Gilheany: New alcohol labels should have been introduced today, but lobbyists derailed them

More than half of all deaths in Ireland are caused by four industries — alcohol, tobacco, fossil fuels, and unhealthy foods, all of which resist public health measures

AAI CEO Dr Sheila Gilheany yesterday outlined some of the 'shocking numbers' around alcohol's impact on road safety to the Oireachtas Joint Committee on Transport. AAI is calling on government to set breath test targets and ensure resources are made available to reach them.

Alcohol is involved in over a third of driver deaths in Ireland. Almost 1 in 8 drivers (12pc) admit to drink driving in the past 12 months. In 2021 just 18 tests per 1,000 inhabitants were carried out here. In France it was 109 & in Estonia it was 576. READ MORE ⬇️ www.independent.ie/irish-news/d...

AAI CEO Sheila Gilheany outlines in The Irish Times how Government receptions funded by Diageo reinforce industry ties & grant access to policymakers for an industry that costs taxpayers about €14bn a year, likely double that of tobacco. Govt would not accept tobacco sponsorship, why is alcohol ok?

Letter to Irish Times from Sheila Gilheany, Alcohol Action Ireland CEO

On average, every day more than 1,000 people in Ireland get behind the wheel after drinking alcohol. Fewer than 14 of them will be caught. Ireland has the lowest level of roadside breath test checkpoints in the EU, while alcohol is involved in over a third of driver deaths on our roads.
