Confused about federal student loans? You’re not the only one. Borrowers everywhere are facing repayment questions, policy changes, and uncertainty. That’s why PPSL’s 2025 Community Action Council is hosting a Student Borrower Town Hall. 📅 Sept 24 | 7 – 8:30 PM EST | Zoom
PPSL is officially on Instagram! 👏 We’re joining to share updates on our litigation and advocacy, demanding accountability in #highered and influencing policy solutions to create a more just and affordable system. This work is more important now than ever.
"Fewer people who are not already rich will be able to go to college." PPSL's Eileen Connor spoke with @bostonglobe.com about the newly restricted access to federal student loans — pushing people of color and low-income students toward predatory private debt or away from #highered altogether.
🚨 Another win for California student loan borrowers! A federal judge denied MOHELA’s attempt to dodge accountability and dismiss Maldonado v. MOHELA — a lawsuit alleging the servicer failed to implement student loan discharges ordered by the Department of Education.
Under the Trump administration, the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau has significantly pulled back its oversight on #studentloan servicers. And we're already seeing the impact: Servicers are facing less accountability for illegally collecting on debts discharged in bankruptcy.
🚨ATTENTION Parent PLUS Borrowers: Protect your loan options🚨 Congress' Reconciliation Bill could eliminate Income-Driven Repayment options for Parent PLUS borrowers. If you're not already enrolled in Income-Contingent Repayment, you could permanently lose access to affordable monthly payments.
PPSL’s Community Action Council was busy advocating in the community last week! 👏 Alyse Hammonds joined the @debtcollective.bsky.social Day of Action in Washington D.C. — sharing her experience with predatory lending and calling for change.
In 2021, the University of Massachusetts made a $130M bet. Aiming to expand access for adult learners, it acquired Brandman University—now a platform renamed UMass Global. PPSL’s Eileen Connor says: “Our flagship public university is on the hook for things... in a way that could cost taxpayers.”
“At first, everything was wonderful.”➡️ PPSL client Sabria Williams explains how a predatory, for-profit school flipped her notion of #highered upside down. From a working mom excited about college to a discouraged borrower facing thousands of dollars worth of debt, Sabria is now calling for change.
Meet Lucinda from Illinois—a Community Action Council member who is advocating for student debt justice and systemic change in higher education.👏👏 She attended DeVry University because it was “affordable and flexible,” but what she actually encountered was “red flags, salesmen, and abandonment.”
Our Community Action Council is already stepping into action, and up to the microphone. At last month’s public hearing with the Department of Education, they shared their experiences overcoming predatory student loan debt and used the opportunity to call for #highered reform.
"ITT offered evenings, which was perfect for a working mom,” said Melody from Texas, a representative on PPSL’s Community Action Council. “It just rips your heart out to have your dream vanish and be stuck with student debt.”
Check out real borrower stories and legal battles in the latest from Campus Files, an @audacyinc.bsky.social podcast. PPSL’s Eileen Connor joined the series alongside borrowers, advocates, and other experts to discuss the impact of predatory for-profit colleges—and the legal fight to stop them.
President Trump’s executive order proposes shutting down the Dept. of Ed—with a major shake-up in how student loans are managed. The trillion-dollar federal student debt portfolio could shift from ED to the Small Business Administration, signaling a possible sale of the portfolio to private buyers.
Arthur Chaney was promised a bright future. When he enrolled at Everest University, staff assured him he had a full scholarship and would walk into a full-time job. But it was a calculated lie. What they called a scholarship was actually a mountain of student loans, buried in misleading paperwork.
Meet Alexis–she attended Florida Coastal School of Law but left with “financial and emotional scars but no degree,” as a result of their predatory behavior. After finishing school elsewhere, Alexis is now a labor & employment attorney who is sharing her story with PPSL’s Community Action Council👏
📢Big news in the fight to protect borrower defense The Dep. of Ed has reaffirmed its commitment to borrower defense—defending the provision that students defrauded by their schools can seek loan relief. This comes after the Supreme Court agreed to review a case challenging this critical protection.
“I had always dreamed of becoming a licensed counselor to help others navigate life’s challenges especially veterans, but that dream came to a halt,” said Dr. Rita Jones. She graduated from GCU, unaware they didn't provide the necessary licensure requirements to practice within the federal gov't.
“Sale or not, it’s time for lawmakers to have an honest conversation about the actual cost of the federal student loan program.” PPSL’s Eileen Connor penned an op-ed in the American Banker today discussing the possibility of a sale of the federal student loan portfolio.
“The evidence is clear.”➡️ #BorrowerDefense provides critical protections for students defrauded by predatory schools. PPSL’s President and Executive Director Eileen Connor and Sweet v. McMahon’s named plaintiff Theresa Sweet joined the latest episode of Campus Files, presented by Audacy Podcasts.
Lovisha J. Williams used federal student aid, including her father's GI Bill benefits, to attend ITT Tech, lured by deceptive promises of a quality education and career opportunities. She was left with mountains of debt and a worthless degree.
Get to know PPSL’s Community Action Council Member, Alyse. Alyse attended Arizona Summit School of Law–before it was found to be fraudulent. She joined the Council and is now driven to “advocate for equitable relief so that the cost of unfulfilled promises isn’t only on the student borrower.” 👏👏
Borrower defense to repayment is a longstanding policy that has helped millions of borrowers who were cheated by their schools. Now, it’s being threatened. It’s time to STAND UP for BD – let’s strengthen this vital consumer protection and prevent the abuse of the federal student loan system.
Colleges shouldn’t cheat students. It’s that simple. And 69% of voters agree. We need to stand up for #BorrowerDefense, a key protection for borrowers, taxpayers, and the federal student loan system alike. Read more here: www.ppsl.org/borrowerdefe...
#DYK more than 770K people have applied for #BorrowerDefense, as of 2023? “This changed my life and I feel like I can breathe again,” said Beth K. from North Carolina on its impact. Read the stories here: standup4borrowerdefense.com
Borrower Defense is under fire—but what’s myth and what’s fact? There’s a lot of noise out there, so we broke down what #BorrowerDefense really is—and why it matters now more than ever. Swipe to find out, and dive into our resource with @ticas-org.bsky.social ➡️ www.ppsl.org/s/PPSL-and-T...
HERE ARE THE FACTS ➡️ Protecting #BorrowerDefense protects students and taxpayers. The law states federal student loan borrowers should not be forced to repay loans for classes or degrees from schools that have lied to, deceived, or misled them.
