In September we featured our new horticultural lead Mark Holman, who will manage the planting for our sensory garden. When we spoke he had recently joined the Gardeners' House team, and we loved his passion and dedication to making the world a better place, one garden at a time. #12daysofchristmas
We love this video of Stephen from our building team working on the masonry of our building. In appointing our contractors, it was essential that they understood the restoration of heritage properties, and it is wonderful to see such care being taken on the Gardeners' House. #12daysofchristmas
In June we has a stall at the Morrab Library's popular Summer Fair. It was a pleasure to meet members of the public in the sunshine in front of the Library and talk about our plans to revive the former Gardeners' House in Morrab Gardens. #12daysofchristmas
Happy New Year from the Gardener's House team! On day 8 of our #12daysofchristmas, we revisit last May when we met Bridgitte. She played a crucial role as part of the Jewell Construction Ltd team on site. It was fascinating to hear about her experiences as a woman in a male-dominated field.
In April, we announced local artist Sue Lewington as our artist in residence to document the transformation of the derelict stables into the Gardeners’ House. Her artworks chronicling this fascinating journey will be compiled into a book forming part of our living archive . #12DaysofChristmas
Emmy - one of our volunteers on The Gardeners' House Penzance project - often shares one of her finds from our archives of over 2,000 volumes documenting the natural history of Cornwall. Her most recent treasure was Marsh and Shore: Bird-watching on the Cornish Coast. #12daysofChristmas
We love these gorgeous tiles, created by the children at St Mary's School in Penzance, working with our artists, Jane Darke and Andrew Tebbs. The designs will inspire the installations we will have in the sensory garden - they're filled with colour, detail and a love of nature! #12daysofChristmas!
A landmark moment for our project in February as the builders started work in earnest! We appointed Jewell Construction Ltd - a family-run Cornish firm with great experience in heritage restoration projects - to undertake this major restoration project of The Gardeners' House. #12daysofChristmas
Before the builders started work we had a chance to explore parts of the building that hadn't been seen for decades. Look at all the character and beautiful features of the building - those stairs have not been trodden in many years! #12daysofchristmas
For the #12daysofChristmas, we are reflecting on the journey we've embarked on over the past year. Just 12 months ago, we were preparing for the exciting transformation of our building in Morrab Gardens by carefully relocating some of the plants from the site.
Merry Christmas from the team at The Gardeners' House! This photo, taken on a snowy day in January 2024, shows our building - the old stables - in Morrab Gardens before work began on its refurbishment. Over the #12daysofChristmas we'll be looking back to see how far we've come in a year.
So what's going to be happening when we're up and running? Lots! People will be using the archives for research or general interest, schools will be able to use our space for ecology studies, #SustainablePenzance will run workshops here - and much more.
For many years Morrab's Head Gardeners lived in the gardens - accommodation for the gardener and their family was provided in the old stable block, next to Morrab Library. One of our supporters, Sue Griffin, recalls visiting her grandfather, William Watson, at his home in the gardens in 1948/9.
We have been building relationships with several partner organisations who will work with us at the Gardeners' House. One of our partners is the Sensory Trust, who already use Morrab Gardens as a space to run activities for people with dementia.
The new Gardeners' House building will become a home to a living archive. At the heart of this is a collection donated by @thehypatiatrust , which showcases the achievements and stories from the last 200 years of the men and women connected to West Cornwall’s natural heritage. #EYA #Archives

We're new here! - so what better way to introduce ourselves than to look back at our journey . . . It starts with a derelict building next to the Morrab Library, in Morrab Gardens, Penzance. Built as stables for Morrab House, it became home to the Head Gardener but has since fallen into disuse.
