Jackie Ormes's strip "Torchy Brown in Dixie to Harlem” first appeared on May 1, 1937. Torchy wasn’t syndicated in the usual sense, but because her paper--the Black-owned Pittsburgh Courier--had national editions, she basically was syndicated. Here are the first two strips:

This is going to sound so whiny but the fact that artists, established and starting out alike, have to promote themselves with attention bait reels or gimmicks is such a wildly frustrating part of being an artist in 2026.

I bought a $100 scanner on eBay a week ago. I haven’t set it up or used it until now. Of course, the first sketch I scanned and digitally colored was a 5 minute doodle of an incel. Or chud. Or whatever 4chan/reddit term you’d use for him. #illustrator #art #comicartisr #feminist

The worst people in the world are probably the best artists (AT TIMES) because they are not held back by any sense of morality or self-awareness. They express parts of themselves that better people are too good to show to the world, without care, which (in my opinion) results in the best artwork.
"I am nothing!" I fall in love quickly with the subjects on my drawings, despite the fact that I normally go into them with nothing in mind. I'll tend to mumble, "I love her" to myself as I sit slumped over the page. She was no different. #illustration #cartoon #pinup #comicsartist #traditional
