Recent Reads: Prophet Volume 4 - Joining. Brandon Graham's deeply weird far future graphic space opera takes a sharp turn, as stories of the clones of John Prophet begin to converge in a rebellion against the inexorable rebirth of the Earth Empire. A world of specialised posthumans is about to fall.

Recent Reads: Swordheart. T Kingfisher's fantasy romance pairs up a snarky, smart widow with a man in a sword. The path of true love is not smooth, much like the roads that make up much of the story as Halla seeks justice and villains seek her sword (and its guardian). You'll root for the lawyer.

In which D&D becomes today's Torment Nexus. "We do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence" Alignment? Apparently, it is a thing now, and this is Anthropic's "Alignment Science Lead". Shortcuts used to teach improv to gamers are not a map to the real world. Aaaaargh...

Text of a tweet: Evan Hubinger @EvanHub Jacob is correct here—we really do earnestly believe AI could kill all humans! I personally think it is >10% within the next decade. I believe Anthropic is trying its best, but we do not yet have a plan to solve alignment for superintelligence and are not clearly on track to.

"Honey, I think we broke NATS." My rooftop ADSB at 15:50 today. There should be a few more planes up there... (The circle to the left of the centre is Heathrow.)

A map of the airspace over London showing live traffic. It is almost empty, just a handful of international flights passing through at altitude.

Decided to write this week's Microsoft dev column on tooling that we usually ignore, but is critical to everything we deliver. I do love delving into the plumbing.

Wooden towers also solve the transportation problem for remote windy sites. Utilities in Germany and Scotland have ordered pilot units. Analysts believe timber could replace steel in thirty percent of onshore towers by 2035. Source : Swedish Environmental Research Institute Lifecycle Study, 2025

This weekend we have reoiled the wooden surfaces in the kitchen. This does mean I am on my second asthma attack, but they do look nice and shiny again.

Recent Reads: Avengers Dissemble. Barnaby Eaton-Jones' novelisation of an unrecorded Goodies revival podcast drama maintains the same anarchic sense of humour as the TV original, with bonus Joanna Lumley. Footnotes add laughs, while the superhero plot skewers the MCU. A children's programme? No way!
