This is especially important in lettering. I'm noticing a trend to break the rules to do "cool shit" without understanding why they are breaking the rule. I waited until I mastered rules before I even thought about breaking them, and even then, I use it sparingly.

Every creative “rule” is made to be broken. The thing about that is, though, it only really works when you break them intentionally, and you do that you need to have learned them and how to use them, first. No shortcuts. You gotta do the thing to learn the thing to break it into new things.

People constantly go to my writers and editors on threads I'm in asking if they can letter the books. Guess who remembers when those same people come to me asking for advice later.

One time I was at San Diego Comicon talking to the Editor-in-chief. At the time, I was writing Birds of Prey, it was a hit book and critically acclaimed when it had been scheduled for cancellation. While talking with the EIC, three DIFFERENT male writers interrupted to pitch taking over the book.

If you're automating most of your job, why are you even doing the job. I wouldn't pay anyone to not actually do thing thing they are charging for, but that's just me.

Asking people for free work so you can turn around and use it to get paid is a wild thing to ask people you want to see you as a colleague.
