#OTD 2/10/1952 #RememberRCN -HMCS IROQUOIS engaged Chinese shore batteries off Korea & is struck by shell aft of “B” Gun, killing 3 sailors & wounding 11. IROQUIOUS broke off to tend wounded & repair damage, returning the next day, destroying the enemy guns. Photo -For Posterity's Sake

#OTD 1/10/1941 #RememberRCN -Appropriately named, Sail Training schooner HMCS ATTABOY is commissioned into the RCN. The owner, Lt. Thomas Fuller, RCNVR (AKA -The Pirate of the Adriatic for his exploits commanding MGB's) of Ottawa loaned the 38 ft schooner to train RCNVR sailors.
#OTD 30/9/1953 #RememberRCN -The second of five Royal Canadian Navy Reserve Squadrons is formed at Kingston ON. VC 921 Squadron is tendered to HMCS CATARAQUI flying Harvard trainers and an Expeditor.
#OTD 29/9/1952 #RememberRCN -Cdr Landymore, RCN as SO Task Unit 95.22 orders 4 USN destroyers to bombard a North Korean gun emplaced in a cave on a cliff, without success. He then moves HMCS IROQUOIS close inshore & with a single broadside, destroys the deeply embedded gun.

#OTD 25/9/1950 #RememberRCN -HMCS ATHABASKAN sends 30 heavily armed sailors in two boats to Korean island of Piun-to. On landing, they found the North Korean soldiers had retreated the day before. The sailors made arrangements for rice and flour for the embattled islanders.
#OTD 25/9/1940 #RememberRCN -HMCS Prince Robert intercepts and captures German passenger freighter Weser off Mexico. Taken as a prize by @RoyalCanNavy & is renamed MS Vancouver Island, entering service with the Canadian Government Merchant Marine.
#OTD 24/9/1997 #RememberRCN -Vice-Admiral Gregory R. Maddison became the 28th person to command Canada`s Navy as Commander Maritime Command and Chief of the Maritime Staff (CMS), replacing VAdm Gary Garnett who had been appointed Vice-Chief of the Defence Staff.

#OTD 24/9/1943 #RememberRCN -U536 enters Baie des Chaleurs waiting off Pointe de Maisonette for UBoat POW’s from Camp 30 in Bowmanville. RCMP foiled escape & RCN laid a trap to capture/sink sub. U536 escaped by hugging the coast on 28 Sept after getting caught in a fishing net.
#OTD 24/9/1942 -U517 survives two attacks from 113 Sqn RCAF Hudson off Sept Îles in the St. Lawrence. 1st U-boat crashed dived as bombs dropped, 3 hrs later crash dived again as 4 bombs on target ahead of conning tower, a dud was later dislodged from U-boats deck.
#OTD 24/9/1940 #RememberRCN -Under the British/American Destroyers for Bases agreement, six USN destroyers are transferred to Canada as Town class destroyers. HMCShips ANNAPOLIS, COLUMBIA, NIAGARA, ST CLAIR, ST CROIX & ST FRANCIS are commissioned into the RCN at Halifax.
#OTD 23/9/1965 #RememberRCN -HMCSubmarine OJIBWA, “O” class submarine, commissions into the RCN at Chatham, UK. She is the first of three “O” class subs built for the RCN. A forth would be acquired as a dockside training vessel. OJIBWA is now a museum ship at Port Burwell, ON.

#OTD 21/9/1942 #RememberRCN -HMCS GEORGIAN while escorting Sydney-Quebec Convoy SQ-38, spots periscope/partial conning tower near Cap des Rosiers & attempts to ram U-boat as it dived. GEORGIAN dropped DC's. Damaged, U-517 broke surface, rolled on its side & was able to escape.

#OTD 20/9/1943 #RememberRCN -HMCS ST. CROIX torpedoed & sunk by acoustic torpedo from U-305, while escorting convoy ON-202. HMS ITCHEN rescues 5 officers & 76 men. Tragically, all but one survivor was killed when ITCHEN was torpedoed two days later. SEE zurl.co/YxRDp
#OTD 20/9/1918 #RememberRCN -Trawler Kingfisher (American) stopped & sunk by German U-cruiser U-155, 85 miles east of Halifax, no casualties. Kingfisher was the last ship sunk by German U-boats in Canadian waters during the First World War. #WWI Photo -Maine Memory Network
