For young people leaving care finances can be a major barrier to accessing the support they need, taking care of their wellbeing or just doing the things they enjoy. Our wellbeing grants allow young people to treat themselves to items or experiences they might other wise avoid spending on.

I’m a Partnerships Engagement Officer, working closely with our existing partners to ensure partnerships run smoothly, maximise referral numbers, and provide support when challenges arise. I also focus on developing new partnerships with local authorities across London to make Settle’s support as accessible as possible for care-experienced young people, helping to improve their long-term outcomes.

Image text: What did you do before joining Settle?

I previously worked for Centrepoint as a Support and Progression Officer, alongside another charity focused on youth violence prevention, where I worked as a Project Assistant, while also studying for my MSc in Global Health, Conflict and Catastrophe Medicine. Both roles involved supporting young people in different capacities one frontline and one more operational and programme-focused. This gave me experience both in directly supporting young people and in helping to design and deliver programmes aimed at promoting their wellbeing and holistic development.

I joined Settle firstly because of its mission to prevent homelessness among care-experienced young people. This really resonated with me because of the work I previously did at Centrepoint, where I saw first-hand how vulnerable homelessness can make young people feel, and the long-term impact it can have on every area of their lives. I also saw how easily it can leave young people more susceptible to other adverse experiences.

What really drew me to Settle is that the organisation doesn’t just focus on housing, but on the wider picture too mental health, wellbeing, finances, confidence, and community. I truly believe the Settle model is a meaningful and preventative solution to homelessness, helping young people build stable and fulfilling futures.

More than anything, Settle feels like more than just a programme; it feels like a genuine community, and that sense of purpose and care is what attracted me to the organisation.

Image text: Hi Paul, What’s your role at Settle?

I am the Senior Community and Participation Officer, which hopefully means I'm in charge of a lot of the more fun, sociable and interactive community aspects of what we offer at Settle. The Settle Community acts as a space for graduates of the Settle programme to be connected with one another, up-skilling and building confidence, as well as a space for advocacy work; lifting up and championing care-experienced voices to influence meaningful change.

My previous background has largely been creative arts; graphic design, photography and art & design facilitation. In early 2019 I got involved with Extinction Rebellion as a local group coordinator and art & design facilitation. I've also been involved with The Care Experienced Movement and in the past 5 years have built up a personal network of adult care-experienced individuals who I've found to be so enriching and generative. I also once had a job as Billy the Badger for Fulham F.C.

I joined Settle because I wanted to combine my lived-experience, with my activism and community organising work to better support and pay-it-backwards to younger generations of care-experienced people, which is hopefully what I'm able to bring to this role. Care (or a lack of care) has come to define so much of our social, economic and political lives and I'm a big believer in community organising being one of the ways we can counter so much of the ills of society.

Period poverty affects far too many young people, and its impact goes far beyond access to products. It can affect someone’s health, confidence, education and sense of dignity. Everyone deserves access to safe, reliable period care, regardless of their circumstances.

Image text: I'm a Senior Trusts and Foundations Officer at Settle, which means I help raise the money that we need to support young people. As we are a charity, we're always fundraising to keep our work going, so I spend most of my time writing about Settle, telling people about the need for our work and how we can make a difference.

Before starting this role in April, I was a Senior Settle Coach for over 3 years! I absolutely loved it. I got to know so many amazing young people and it was such a privilege to see each person achieve things they never thought they could. This new role is great, because it gives me the opportunity to help more young people experience Settle's life changing support.

Image Text: I worked at a charity that supported charity CEOs who had lived experience of the problem they were trying to solve. Our aim was to make sure that they were given personalised support to give them the best chance at making a difference, so I worked closely with each person to understand what they needed, like support with their finances or wellbeing - kind of like a Settle Coach!

Image text: I had always wanted to work in a frontline role. I love meeting lots of different people and making sure people feel seen and heard is incredibly important to me - especially if they've been disempowered. I wanted to work somewhere that helped people to believe in themselves and see that other people believe in them.

I started to learn more about the care system in my previous job, where I worked with someone who was building trauma-informed children's homes in the UK. The more I learned about what young people's experience can be like in the care system, the more I wanted to play a part in helping those young people experience meaningful care and support.
