Probably some recency bias+hype cycle in this, but AC8 is my 3rd favorite in the franchise, behind JP3 and Zero It's the complete package. Immaculately detailed, updated mechanics, strongest characterization, and great threads to the future for the knowers. This is our DMC5 it exceeded expectations
Completed just in time for Ace Combat 8. Incredible visual spectacle as only Remedy knows how to do, and much more fun combat after getting the weapon switch mod. Map busywork and menial tasks bloat the world a bit too much, and the zone-leveling system is an awful grind if you want those outfits.
Bless game modders. Control Resonant already got a style meter and weapon swapping mods on the nexus.

Finally decided to attempt the new Variant Dungeon Advanced mode through PF, and cleared with a handful of wipes while learning the mechanics. If this is about the difficulty to expect from the new 8-man tier then my problems with Normal are functionally solved.

As more info and footage of Ace Combat 8 comes out, I realize AC7 was a functional but basic return to form just to prove the foundation still worked. AC8 Will be our DMC5. The true vision the dev team wanted to achieve with 7 but didn't have the resources for, and a celebration of the franchise.
As I'm replaying the Ace Combat games I own to build hype for AC8, I forgot some aspects on how incredible Project Wingman was. 3 Dudes making their own game when the franchise died, capturing the plane spirit, and forming it into something unique fans can point to for those looking for more--
