Civil rights and liberties advocate, appreciator of nice things like democracy and the Boston Celtics. Pro-immigrant. Anti-fascist. Opinions mine.

A professional basketball team fired a broadcaster they had just announced hiring after they learned he had posted racist and sexist comments online as a teenager. How long before some right wing media or politics person loudly gives him a job? A day? A week? www.nytimes.com/athletic/765...

Bell was set to appear at Sunday’s Fan Fest scrimmage and begin working in Portland next week.

It's not just Flock. And it's not just license plate readers. Great piece from my colleague @gideonepstein.bsky.social on the many invasive surveillance technologies pushed by private companies and adopted by police—almost entirely absent democratic debate or oversight. www.wbur.org/cognoscenti/...

Flock is just one part of the new surveillance state

"Flock and other companies are building an omnipresent digital dragnet without democratic consent, enabling law enforcement to track people across the country with the click of a mouse," writes Gideon...

If you, btw, would like an example of a place where data centres are *actually* being restricted by legislation, go look at Denmark - where they are now last in the grid connection queue, prioritising socially valuable load growth (like electrification, heating, cooling, new homes) first

Denmark Puts Data Centers Last in New Grid Law

Denmark's emergency grid law puts data centers last behind households and green-transition projects, formalizing rationing that began in February 2026.

TODAY: New SNAP cuts are kicking in because of Trump's "Big Beautiful Bill." 5 million people have already lost food assistance, including 1.5 million+ kids since the bill was enacted. No kid deserves to go hungry so Trump can give his billionaire buddies another tax handout.

The fact that people hate on this kid is so wild to me. He’s by all accounts an incredibly thoughtful, ethical person who takes his leadership seriously. Remarkable that he’s so clear eyed about so many things at such a young age. This is a Wemby stan account 😤

Just asked Victor Wembanyama if he’d ever consider promoting a sports betting company. “Absolutely not. I will never do that. Honestly, I think it's very sad to see some players promote it. .. Everybody does whatever they want, but without me.”

Even if you've never been a union member, the attacks on unions have cost you money. The typical worker would be earning $5,000 more a year if unions were as strong today as they were five decades ago

Reading Jill Lepore’s new book Rise and Fall of the Artificial State. One of my fave parts is her argument that we have gone right back to the “mystery” stage of knowledge and power. Mystery (religion) ➡️ fact (law) ➡️ numbers (the state) ➡️ data (the computer and corporation) ➡️ mystery (AI)
