Cerrillos, Spanish for "the little hills," was known for mining before Europeans arrived. In fact, Cerrillos has the longest historically intact record of pick and shovel mining in the Southwest. Humans settled in this area as early as 500 A.D. Puebloans discovered gold, lead and turquoise deposits.

Lybrook Fossil Area is a colorful, stark spectrum of earth tones, ranging from yellow, brown, pink, and purple to stark, tall hills of layered black and white. It is a cornucopia of peculiar rock formations, including tall spires, hoodoos, towering caprocks, and other bizarre geologic specimens.

Off in the distance, Lake Roberts is a 70-acre, man-made reservoir in the Gila National Forest, offering boating, fishing, bird-watching & nearby campgrounds. Located about 30 miles north of Silver City, the lake was created in 1963 by damming Sapillo Creek. #nature #daytrip #travel

Las Conchas Trail is a scenic, dog-friendly hike in the Jemez Mountains. It follows the East Fork of the Jemez River. Starting at an elevation of 8,400 feet, the 5.6 miles out-and-back trail is known for lush meadows, towering rock formations, and excellent wildflower viewing. #hiking #NewMexico

Located a half-mile northwest of Bernalillo on the west banks of the Rio Grande, Kuaua Ruins is a pre-contact Tiwa village, known since 1940 as Coronado Historic Site. Settled around 1300 AD, the remnants of the multi-story village are west of the main route of El Camino Real. #travel #NewMexico

On the morning of July 16, 1945, residents of Carrizozo, #NewMexico were jolted awake by a bright flash & shockwaves. A mushroom cloud rose 38,000 feet into the sky. Located 35 miles southeast of the Trinity site (aka ground zero), radioactive ash settled on the town for 5 days. #history
