It's been such a busy summer between spending July in Germany/Belgium for a study abroad trip and August hosting visitors from Carelton College and Keimyung University here in Kyoto. Now to spend the rest of summer break intensely writing. ✍️

I’ve published a new article based on my recent archival research examining the historical difference between learning Japanese as a language and kokugo (“national language”) education. ↓↓↓ open.substack.com/pub/kyattoga...

I can't believe how fast my research trip has gone by. It's my last week in Germany before I go home, but I am very happy to have the chance to visit @rwth.bsky.social.
I am so honored to have the chance to present at @kuleuvenuniversity.bsky.social for the @iaccp.bsky.social conference. I had the best time making so many friends in such an amazing town and campus.
The preprint of my recent article is currently available! Social Bias and Surprisal Response in Multilingual Contexts: How Foreign-Appearing Speakers in Japan Are Perceived ssrn.com/abstract=657...

I wrote this month’s article for the World Citizenship Education Project's Lumen blog on how the stories we assume about others can quietly shape language, bias, and exclusion in a Japanese context. "The Stories We Assume About Others" worldcitizenship.educ.kyoto-u.ac.jp/en/blog_en/p...

Immigration in the U.S. is being used to decide who “counts” as American. This piece traces how Trump-era rhetoric and enforcement plug into older nativist patterns, and what that reveals about the country’s identity. open.substack.com/pub/kyattoga...

My recent video explores what works by Arendt, Levi, Girard, Foucault, and Maruyama may show us about today’s immigration politics in the US and Japan. And of course, looking at some modern vampires along the way. ↓ ↓ ↓ youtu.be/kD_LpDzgQNI?...
My biggest issue in research is how easily distracted I get. Like I am passionate about my research, yes. But it only took one conversation with a job recruiter from Mitsubishi to get me reading articles on eye tracking and signal detection in driving simulations.
New article out, and Open Access! Check out my co-authored piece with Dr. Mie Hiramoto analyzing intimate hair removal advertisements aimed at Japanese men, and contrasting this with Japanese online discourse around men's grooming practices! brill.com/view/journal...

Tokyo is very fun to visit, but I'm always happy to come back to Kyoto. It has such a good balance of urban and nature.

www.asahipress.com/bookdetail_n...
