What’s that swirl on radar? It’s not a tropical storm… yet. It’s a mesoscale convective vortex (MCV), a temporary spin left behind by thunderstorms. It could develop over the next few days, but heavy rain is the main threat for Florida’s west coast for now.

Super Typhoon #Sinlaku is bearing down on the Northern Mariana Islands, with landfall imminent over Tinian and Saipan. Winds are 240 km/h. As the sun sets, the eye reveals a “stadium effect”, with towering walls of cloud encircling a deceptively calm core just ahead of impact.

Extratropical Cyclone #Vaianu continues to spiral toward the North Island of New Zealand. Damaging winds are expected, with severe gusts likely to bring down trees, cause power outages, and create hazardous conditions, particularly in exposed northern and eastern areas.

A perfect example of the Coriolis effect at work. Twin cyclones, one in each hemisphere, spinning in opposite directions, and prevented from crossing the equator.

🌀 Ex-Tropical Cyclone #Vaianu will bring very strong winds and heavy rain to the North Island and the upper South Island of New Zealand this weekend. Winds will exceed 100 km/h in some regions:
