It looks like fall out there, with a lot of low clouds and goldenrods popping everywhere, but it doesn’t necessarily feel like fall, with high dewpoints still throughout the state. Still waiting for that fall cold front to come through and really bring us into the season.

East-central Wisconsin has gotten walloped with rain in the last 24 hours, with some places seeing 4-5 inches.

As a result of the drought, Wisconsin has counties eligible for the Livestock Forage Disaster Program, Emergency Assistance for Livestock Honeybees and Farm-Raised Fish Program, and Emergency Haying and Grazing. Check with your local Farm Service Agency office for more details.

The new Drought Monitor is out. There isn't a significant change from last week, but a little bit more of southern Wisconsin has been added to the Abnormally Dry category. Most of the state received less than an inch of rain in the past week and soils continue to dry out.

Have some feisty storms popping up in southern Wisconsin this morning near the boundary that's been hanging out the last couple days. Gusty winds, small hail, heavy rain, and lightning are all likely with the storms this morning. When thunder roars, go indoors!

Overnight storms brought gusty winds and heavy rain to central Wisconsin. The peak gust measured by Wisconet was over 52 mph. Unfortunately, most of the rain missed the most significant areas of drought in the northwestern part of the state. New Drought Monitor tomorrow.

I declare heat indices >= 100 degrees to be illegal in September.

It took all of August for us to record a 90-degree temperature in Wisconsin. We're knocking that out of the park early this month.

It's September 1 and we'd rather be thinking about the leaves changing colors, apple cider, and pumpkin picking. Instead, we're looking at tropical dewpoints and a chance of severe thunderstorms this afternoon. Gusty winds, lightning, and heavy rain will be the main threats.

C'mon man, it's August 31.

-sigh- if you look down at those monthly outlook graphics... September will trend towards warmer than average with equal chances at above, near, or below normal precipitation...and persistent drought across northern Wisconsin. And El Niño doesn't set us up to have a cold and snowy winter. 😔

Well, we didn’t get widespread half-inch rain totals this weekend, but some places saw that. Not too much extra rain expected the next few days, but we can expect to see the 90s return Monday through Wednesday. This will exacerbate our drought conditions.

If we can get a widespread half inch of rain across the northern half of Wisconsin, that would certainly help, but not fully resolve, our drought issues. The question is whether we’ll truly get widespread precipitation or if it will be more scattered.

The latest Drought Monitor is out and it continues to be bad news for northern Wisconsin. 70.4% of the state is in Moderate Drought or worse. Nearly 15% of the state is now in Extreme Drought. Only 6.31% of the state is clear of any classification.

Lights out and eyes up the next couple nights! Tonight, more than 19 million birds are expected to fly across Wisconsin as we approach the peak of fall migration in September. Tomorrow night, we'll see a roughly 94% eclipsing of the moon between 8:23 pm and 2:01 am.

While some places got some needed rainfall in the last 24 hours, most did not. The winners were Maple and La Farge - each around 1” of rain. Soils in the northern half of Wisconsin are very dry, with the top eight inches near 0% plant available water. New Drought Monitor tomorrow.

A Severe Thunderstorm Watch has been issued for northwestern Wisconsin until 10pm. Wind gusts to 65 miles per hour and hail to ping pong ball size are possible with the strongest storms. All thunderstorms produce lightning, so when thunder roars, go indoors!

We are starting to see showers and thunderstorms pop up in northwestern Wisconsin ahead of a cold front. A few storms may produce gusty winds and large hail this afternoon. Not much rain is expected, so this won't have much impact on the drought situation in the Northwoods.

It’s a cool (maybe even frosty!) start to the work week. We’ve seen temperatures dip into the mid-30s in northern Wisconsin this morning and upper-40s have been recorded all the way to the Illinois state line. We’re just 8 days from the start of climatological fall.

With the latest drought monitor release, Extreme Drought has been added to northern Wisconsin, including Bayfield, Iron, Ashland, Sawyer, Price, Rusk, Oneida, and Vila Counties. We haven't had Extreme Drought in Wisconsin since January 2024.
