My older sister had the Red, Blue and Sgt Pepper so thought I had the Beatles sorted. Only discovered Revolver because I liked Start by The Jam and (deep breath, slowly exhale) the cover of Tomorrow Never Knows by Phil Collins. I mean, what can you say?
I had a Red and Blue childhood too - I didn't hear Revolver until the late '80s and, I agree, it was a pretty staggering revelation. All that terrific music, hiding in plain sight...
I remember seeing it on tape in St Martins Records Leicester in about 1990 and thinking "Is this a rarities collection? Or a weird best of?" as I'd never heard half the songs. Mind blown not long after!
Definitely. The only tracks we would have heard were both sides of the single which isn't representative of the album. Unlike Rubber Soul where the Red had 6/14 tracks and gave you a pretty good idea of what the album was like.
I am convinced this is the reason why Revolver did not get much recognition until much later. I grew up knowing only two tracks, and one of them was Yellow Submarine. Having said that, it ain’t their best!
I got to know Revolver gradually through the red, then RnR music and Love Songs comps, which between them cover all the Macca tracks plus YS and Taxman. Hence my 'new' Revolver tracks when I got the album were all of John's 5 and 2 George. It took ages before I got a proper handle on it as an album.
He suffered for his art.
