People struggling financially have voted predominantly for the AfD in recent elections. Not in Berlin. The Left put socializing corporate landlords on the ballot, and won the election and this group.
The AfD won another state election according to exit polls. 51% of workers and 58% of those with a poor financial situation voted for this right wing extremist party in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. When will we finally get an economics of never again?
The Left party just won a historic victory in Berlin with 24.5% of votes according to exit polls. Elif Elrap would be the first mayor of Turkish descent in a city that is home to the largest Turkish community outside Turkey. (1/3)

The $20 burrito question is a crossroads. Democratic path: address the affordability crisis, end the war & deliver an economy that works for all. Authoritarian path: downplay material grievances, mobilize through culture war and resentment, & rely on intimidation and coercion.
Isabella is rightly worried: Since the Linke would lead this government and is committed to expropriating institutional landlords, and since the SPD is still the same old SPD, chances are the SPD is going do what it always does when the vibes in Berlin get a little too revolutionary.

Austerity contributed to the demise of the Weimar Republic. This doesn’t seem to be well understood in Germany, of all places.

This is why we need anti-fascist economics. Avi nails it: The desire to push back against the arrogance and impunity of elites is a defining force in politics today. It will either be harnessed by progressive politics to make a fairer economy for all… Or it will fuel fascism.
