Oceanographer and lead of MBARI's Carbon Flux Ecology team. I think a lot about sinking particles, the carbon cycle, and microscopic creatures. Otherwise: fiber art, designing/making clothes, chickens. Views expressed here are my own.

On Tuesday the Monterey County Board of Supervisors is voting to approve funding for >100 new license plate surveillance cameras and a 10 year contract. Comments can be emailed by Monday, or you can attend the meeting and speak in person. When did we consent to constant surveillance by the police?

Vistra’s battery storage facility, the largest in the world, caught fire in the center of a global academic hub; where state and local agencies failed to study the impacts tied to a growing industry, local researchers and community groups stepped in. shorturl.at/fu4wD

Local researchers fill gaps left by state and local agencies after the Vistra battery fire.

Within days of the 2025 Moss Landing fire, Ivano Aiello, a Prunedale resident and a marine geologist at Moss Landing Marine Labs, noticed something was off. Most obvious were the

Wow, did you know that Monterey County has at least 316 surveillance cameras recording everyone’s movements? This map from @deflock.org shows their locations. This is among the highest per capita surveillance in the country according to this organization.

It is so amazing that we can study protists (single celled organisms) using an ROV. We collected one of these on the #LivingBioreactors cruise on the @schmidtocean.bsky.social R/V Falkor last month. It went to a colleague studying the chemistry of their calcium carbonate shells.

Wow. Foraminifera! ROV pilots paused and carefully zoomed in to collect footage of these single-celled microorganisms, or protists, at 843 m during the #OBVI #LivingBioreactors expedition w/ @schmidtsciences.bsky.social offshore of Argentina. Read the full caption: youtube.com/shorts/Yv_ud...

My co-PIs Anita and Anela are so inspiring. Check out this video explaining why I am spending 35 days at sea! #LivingBioreactors @schmidtocean.bsky.social #OBVI @mbarinews.bsky.social

Our first #OBVI #LivingBioreactors expedition video is out! Discover how the science team is studying the gut microbiomes of vertically migrating animals and how these microbiomes affect carbon storage in the deep sea, with support from @schmidtsciences.bsky.social www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmej...

It sounds like there are lots of people excited to tune into the next #LivingBioreactors ROV dive aboard the Falkor too. FYI I think this will be two days from now. We are steaming offshore and deploying a bunch of really cool instruments before getting eyes in the midwater.

Our new instrument, the SINKing Ecology Robot (SINKER) was highlighted recently in the Monterey Herald. I love how this story highlights the contributions of the diverse team require to make these kind of advancements in ocean science. www.montereyherald.com/2026/01/09/t...

“If we can find ways to more realistically represent these processes in the models, then our understanding of what’s going to happen in the future should be more accurate.”
