You probably already know this — because the demands of capitalism and the cost of dog food means I have to keep banging on about it — but I've got a book out on Monday. Early readers have been extremely nice about it. Which is frankly a relief, because it’s a bit late to rewrite the bastard now.

Christmas solved! If you know anyone who likes to laugh, this is the gift. The brilliant Russell Jones has taken one of the country's most beloved obsessions and explained it - hilariously. Why does your dog argue with the wind? How can a chihuahua and a Great Dane be the same species? (Hint: human input, wise or otherwise.) I already knew I loved the author from his Tory trilogy, but I never knew I could be so fascinated by a branch of evolution; I didn't even need the regular base-touches with Jones's lunatic Baxter to keep me reading. Baxter, like many dogs and all spaniels, is clearly a nightmare as well as a delight; you will fall in love with him from the illustrations alone. 'Dogs can detect cancer, guide a blind person safely through a city, find a lost child, pull a drowning sailor from the sea, or control several hundred sheep with nothing more than a change of posture. Others get their heads trapped in buckets or can easily be mistaken for disgruntled footstools.' If you like Bill Bryson, read Jones. And get a copy for everyone in your life who has ever known, or laughed/wondered at, a dog.
