Throwing this out to ether in hope of clarification: What options will voters have? -Yes [to whole 2-part qn] vs No [to whole 2-part qn]. This makes no sense bc qn contains contradiction. -Stay in Canada vs Initiate binding ref'm (forced choice btn two alternatives). #alberta #abpoli #cdnpoli

The referendum Q now proposed by Smith in #Alberta is ridiculous. You cannot ask a double barrelled Q where two opposing Qs are being asked: to stay OR leave! This is lazy and confusing. Hire a social scientist! Do this right, dammit. #abpoli #cdnpoli

"The Round Table was just a lot of people telling jokes and telling each other how good they were. Just a bunch of loudmouths showing off, ... There was no truth in anything they said. It was the terrible day of the wisecrack, so there didn't have to be any truth". (Dorothy Parker, 1956 interview).

I am so so so tired of the infantile performative demands for “respect” emitted by Republicans. I learned a long time ago that respect can’t be ordered, it can only be earned; and that if you haven’t earned it you won’t get it by insisting that people put on a performance of subordination.

Facing bipartisan anger over the Epstein files, Attorney General Pam Bondi went on the attack in a House hearing on Wednesday, refusing to apologize to survivors who were in the room and instead demanding that Democrats apologize to President Trump. See the key moments. trib.al/ak3sSOH

NO ONE AT UALBERTA: ABSOLUTELY NO ONE AT UALBERTA: PRESIDENT OF UALBERTA: We must get rid of EDI because outcomes > acronyms & bold excellence striding into the future & it might make the UCP like us! Sometimes I’m proud of where I work; other times not so much. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...

U of A looks to remove EDI from hiring policy | CBC News

The University of Alberta is proposing to eliminate Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (EDI) from its hiring policy, a year after the school initially said it was moving away from the term.

“The bulk of the work was performed by faculty and their department heads, who altered hundreds of syllabi. Deans forwarded 54 courses to the president & provost for final review. The president granted 48 exceptions”. I’d love to hear abt dept heads & deans who said screw this, I will not comply.

New: Texas A&M University announced Friday that it is eliminating its women’s and gender studies degree program.

Whether or not journalists ever achieve a gotcha moment where a DHS goon says on a hot mic “yes we are Nazis”, these posts & memes move the visual Overton window, licensing other right-wing groups to use more and more ethnic nationalism images. It’s aesthetics creep.

My first thought was, well, obviously. But there's real insights in this story, including the back and forth between journalists and DHS. (gift article)

This is a #yeg complaint abt juxtaposition of bloated affluence & crappy public services in #edmonton. Sitting in stalled bus stuck behind delivery truck for high-end furniture which is wedged in snow. Another bus stuck in front of us. Giant SUVs zooming past, passengers gawking at plebs on buses.

Amazon is helping fund a $300 million build of a ballroom for the White House. Independent bookstores are donating to food banks and organizations that help with food insecurity. They are not the same.

Good reminder, relevant to #abpoli, that the right doesn’t have much of a track record on “compromising” on their aversion to trans people existing (unless you count “they should not exist” as a compromise position). Centrist and left can’t just cede a little bit of ground and hope for detente.

I'm so glad you said this, because about 30 seconds ago, I published a newsletter piece detailing how conservatives have dump-trucked through all of the previously established common sense, nuanced, compromise positions on trans rights to get here: burns-notice.ghost.io/what-would-t...
