Oftentimes the Western attitude towards non-Westerners is so baked into their worldviews they don't even notice it. But it's very obvious, when the majority of anti-war sentiment coalesces around "throwing away the lives of troops", that the lives of those outside the metropole don't matter at all.
Our first foreign relations history class of the fall quarter happens to fall on the 25th anniversary of 9/11, the very event that drove me to study U.S. foreign policy for the last 25 years, and rather than do something maudlin I think we'll just go through countless images like this

to put iit another way: nissan motors has had operating losses in their automotive manufacturing business for 3 of the last 5 years. their finance arm, by contrast, has net income around $300m/yr they make cars as a loss leader to sell subprime autoloans
