Whether it’s fighting mass incarceration or building real democracy for working people, our demands are common sense — the broken status quo is what’s radical and dangerous. Our movement is growing because our vision is popular. We have a world to win: socialists.nyc/join

The 2027 City Budget is a milestone for socialist governance and a big step to building the city we deserve. Socialists in office are proving that we can reject austerity and invest in the working people who make NYC. And the work is just getting started.

New York City DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISTS of America Statement on the FY27 City Budget
BUILDING THE CITY
WE DESERVE
Mayor Mamdani's first budget represents a milestone for socialist governance in New York City. In the face of Governor Kathy Hochul's refusal to support the popular demand to raise taxes on millionaires and corporations, the Mayor pushed to reset our city's relationship with Albany, securing some of the revenue our city is owed by the state and successfully eliminating a historic budget deficit leftover from Eric Adams's administration. Instead of closing the gap by slashing programs, this budget cuts wasteful contracts with private companies.
We know, however, that much work remains to be done - in New York City and Albany - to achieve the fully-funded city we deserve.New York City
DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISTS of America
The Mayor and progressive Council Members - including City Socialists in Office Alexa Avilés, Tiffany Cabán, Shahana Hanif, and Chi Ossé - have rejected the austerity that has marked city spending for decades. This budget provides stable, permanent funding for parks and libraries and billions for universal childcare. It increases rental subsidies for the lowest-income New Yorkers and, in the capital budget, commits over $5 billion to build affordable housing and $5.6 billion to NYCHA. Thanks to the Progressive Caucus's advocacy, it includes $175 million for CityFHEPS rental vouchers.
Amid Trump's devastating cuts to trans healthcare, we celebrate $15 million for gender affirming care, which primarily covers a direct access fund for trans youth.New York City
DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISTS of America
This budget's investments in the Office of Community Safety, non-police crisis response programs, including the Progressive Caucus's Crisis to Care package, and violence and hate crime prevention represent a significant step towards true public safety. We are heartened that, thanks to firm advocacy from City Socialists in Office Tiffany Cabán, Alexa Avilés, Shahana Hanif, and Chi Ossé and grassroots organizations, there will be no increase to the NYPD headcount. We look forward to continuing to fight for a budget and a city that refuses to see arrests and incarceration as the solutions to all social ills.New York City
DEMOCRATIC SOCIALISTS of America
We know that to achieve true public safety and more, we must tax the rich. We are proud that this year, together with Mayor Mamdani, we won a tax on the second homes of New York City's wealthiest. But it's far from enough. We will continue to fight to ensure that corporations and the ultra-rich pay their fair share. We envision a city where working people can thrive, where housing is an affordable public good, and where real safety and wellbeing are prioritized over policing and punishment. We are proud that this budget advances these goals and look forward to building this future.

It’s July 1. Today, nearly half a million New Yorkers will lose healthcare. Governor Hochul could have stopped this for less than 1% of the final state budget. Instead, she put wealthy donors over our lives.

450,000
NEW
YORKERS
LOSE THEIR
HEALTHCARE TODAYIt's July 1.
Today, over 450,000 New Yorkers will be kicked off their
Essential Plan healthcare coverage.
During budget negotiations, we called on Governor Hochul to tax the rich and stop this healthcare catastrophe. She refused.New York's Essential Plan previously covered households making up to 250% of the federal poverty line, or:
$39,900 for a single adult with no children
$80,375 for a family of fourTrump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act decimated healthcare spending.
In response, New York shrunk eligibility for the Essential Plan from 250% to 200% of the federal poverty line.
The change takes effect today.
Nearly half a million will lose insurance.

The billionaire class says we can’t balance the budget without cutting services and raising costs. A socialist just proved them wrong. Investing in housing, mental health, parks, and libraries is what budgets are for & what working people deserve. That’s your city on socialism.

YOUR CITY ON SOCIALISM:
NO NEW CUTS NO NEW COPS
Zohran Mamdani just eliminated
Eric Adams' $12 billion budget deficit-all without raising costs on working families and while making new investments in communities, not cops."Throughout this process, I have been reminded of the words of Austrian economist Friedrich Hayek: 'If socialists understood economics, they would not be socialists. If the past months have shown us anything, it is that socialists not only understand economics just as well as the capitalists who came before, but we can solve their years of mismanagement
THROUGH AN EMBRACE OF OUR PRINCIPLES."
-ZOHRAN MAMDANI

For years, Sam has worked behind the scenes to build our movement as an NYC-DSA organizer. Now, Queens has sent her to Albany to organize from inside the Capitol.

Socialism wins in the Lower East Side! We’re sending another ecosocialist and tenants’ champion to Albany to fight for the affordable, beautiful future that workers deserve. Illapa’s victory proves socialism still has a home downtown.

ABER WINS Palestine was on the ballot, and now a Palestinian-American democratic socialist is going to Albany. Aber is exactly who New Yorkers need fighting for them in the State Senate. Because socialists get it done. 🌹
