Another 🐉🪰: This time, a female globe skimmer (Pantala flavescens). These dragonflies can be found in large swarms here in 🇯🇵. Its brain is smaller than that of S. albardae, lacks innervation of the ocelli and most of the lobula, but shows broad arborizations of the large lamina. #FluorescenceFriday

We mourn the loss of an exceptional scientist and one of the most effective and powerful international voices for nature of recent generations, Josef “Sepp” Settele. Sepp was a pillar of IPBES’s success throughout its existence. He was a champion for better-informed policy for people and nature.

Commemorative graphic on dark green background. Central photo shows Josef Settele, seated at a table. A nameplate reads "ASSESSMENT CO-CHAIR." A partial UN logo is visible on a screen in the background. The photo is framed by illustrated botanical and insect elements including butterflies, a bumblebee, a dragonfly, flowers, and leaves. Gold text below reads: Josef "Sepp" Settele, 1961–2026.

Hello, since Redbubble did me dirty (suspension without explanation while owing me money) let's experiment a little bit! If I've known you long enough not to abuse my work and you want a print/sticker/whatever from me, pay me what you want, I'll give you high resolution files. Try me! #Art #SciArt

I came across on my hard drive while looking for other things. I segmented the nervous system and part of the digestive system in this Atta vollenweideri head, then apparently I animated it and forgot it existed... This was based on CT data graciously provided by the Labonte lab.

can’t wait. To give a bit of a hint: I‘m working on standardization of 3d anatomy modeling, complex 4d interaction and changing the dynamic of visualization from serving to participating and maybe even leading in scientific research. And I so love what I am doing now. I almost wish I started earlier

Mieren die een vet en zout chipje willen verzamelen zie ik niet zo vaak! Zwarte zaadmier, Tetramorium caespitum 🐜

Posting this for no particular reason, but I should be doing vacation stuff and instead I'm looking through some scans I made last week. Here is a very rough brain of a Pieris brassicae butterfly 🦋, about 2 mm wide. CLSM image, visualized with BigVolumeBrowser in Fiji #Entomology

The International Congress of NeuroETHOLOGY and the International Congress of NeuroENDROCRINOLOGY are happening at the same time (opposite sides of the Pacific) and using the same #ICN2026... Making it very hard for us regular neuro-plebs to follow along at home 🤣🧠

This is why we call Tetramorium pavement ants "seed ants" in the Netherlands... 🐜 To be honest I don't see this behavior that often, but it's a neat example.

"You can tell the gender of an ant by dropping it into water. If it sinks, it's a girl ant. If it floats, it's boy-ant!" 🐜🤦
