"Trees are sanctuaries. Whoever knows how to speak to them, whoever knows how to listen to them, can learn the truth. They do not preach learning and precepts, they preach, undeterred by particulars, the ancient law of life." - Hermann Hesse 🎨 Julia Tar

Illustration of a large oak tree with a face on its trunk. A person is sitting on the ground, facing the tree, and there is a reflection of a white stag in the water.

A handcrafted 'Doors of Durin' diorama, inspired by The Lord of the Rings, by artist @sergiomodelismo. The scene is built inside a picture frame to create a "living painting" effect. Sculpted putty was used for the rock face and natural elements like rosemary branches for the trees. #art #lotr

I recently purchased at auction one of SR Badmin’s sketchbooks. I had to have it because I’d spotted that one of the pages contained a study for an illustration in the Ladybird book ‘Trees’. As close as I’ll probably ever come to owning original Nature series artwork 😊

A small open sketchpad containing a study of trees and the final illustration from the ladybird book, published in 1963, of the page Ilex and Wild Cherry

It was great joining Njideka Akunyili Crosby—a gifted Nigerian-born, Los Angeles-based artist—to unveil our first portrait together. This piece reflects so many chapters of Michelle and my story, and we’re thrilled that it will be on display at the Obama Presidential Center starting this Juneteenth.
