Our latest for @sequentialscholars.bsky.social discusses Himmel's funeral in Frieren. #ComicsStudies #Manga

Sequential Scholars@sequentialscholars.bsky.social · 3d ago

One of the more interesting structural elements in Frieren is the way that the text plays on hindsight to add progressive significance to a key moment from the opening chapter: Frieren’s emotional breakdown at Himmel’s funeral. #frieren 1/9

Our latest for @sequentialscholars.bsky.social spotlights Frieren as transcultural text. #ComicsStudies #Manga

Sequential Scholars@sequentialscholars.bsky.social · 5d ago

Through its combination of European settings, Western high fantasy, and Eastern manga storytelling techniques, Frieren offers a stalwart example of a modern transnational manga – one that bridges cultures and nationalities in a way that reflects the international scope of manga. #frieren 1/10

I never thought I needed a Garfield stocking hanger but that was before I knew about the Garfield stocking hanger

My guy @adamreck.bsky.social pays tribute to the artist Joshua Cassara, who tragically passed away this week, far too young. I was lucky enough to meet Josh when Adam got his Green Lagoon print signed, and he was very kind & generous on top of all his talent.

Artist Joshua Cassara, best known for his work on X-Force and X-Men during the Krakoa era, died this week. CXF's Adam Reck pays tribute.

Our next unit for @sequentialscholars.bsky.social will be tackling the ongoing manga Frieren. #ComicsStudies #Manga

Our latest for @sequentialscholars.bsky.social talks screens as mirrors in Bitch Planet. #ComicsStudies

Sequential Scholars@sequentialscholars.bsky.social · 2w ago

In “How Do Screens Function as Mirrors in Bitch Planet?” Francesca Lyn argues that the comic “presents a foreboding techno-future where screens are used as an ubiquitous method of patriarchal control” and proceeds to discuss the many ways screens signal surveillance & subversion. 1/11 #ComicsStudies

I'm bored AMA

I haven't always loved everything about the Lanterns show (I'd like to see them do more with the Sci-fi concepts that are kinda just there) but I have enjoyed the Sex Stuff.

Reading some Hal Jordan comics

"In honor of Steinem’s passing, I reread her personal reflection on her fierce love for a deeply flawed yet undeniably powerful female superhero and found myself revisiting my own complicated affection for a real woman with real flaws who nonetheless really inspired me." Our latest for @sequentialscholars.bsky.social spotlights a @wwacomics.bsky.social roundtable about teaching Kelly Sue DeConnick and Valentine De Landro's Bitch Planet. #ComicsStudies

Sequential Scholars@sequentialscholars.bsky.social · 3w ago

In a 2016 roundtable moderated by Kate Tanski for Women Write About Comics, educators/scholars Elizabeth Coody, Rachelle Cruz, Andrea Horbinski, Chandra Jenkins, Nancee Reeves & Ambria Taylor discuss the rewards & challenges of teaching "Bitch Planet" in various educational contexts. 1/10 #Comics

Just watched the first X-Men movie with @adamreck.bsky.social for the first time in like 20 years and man was it ever a bold visual choice to depict all the X-Men except Wolverine with the kind of superpowers where you stand very still in a single location and make a stink face at a distant target.

Our latest for @sequentialscholars.bsky.social talks Bitch Planet x activist paratexts. #ComicsStudies

Sequential Scholars@sequentialscholars.bsky.social · 3w ago

American comic book fan communities are stereotypically male. “Stereotypically” because girls & women have always loved comics but are less represented, both culturally & in terms of marketing. “Bitch Planet” addresses this neglect, cultivating a woman-led, explicitly feminist fan community. 1/13

Our latest for @sequentialscholars.bsky.social talks Bitch Planet x politics of objectification. #ComicsStudies

Sequential Scholars@sequentialscholars.bsky.social · 3w ago

Kelly Sue DeConnick & Valentine de Landro’s “Bitch Planet” features considerable nudity (which we will have to censor here). It’s also indebted to exploitation aesthetics. Yet it consistently–and intersectionally–engages & challenges the politics of objectification. 1/15 #ComicsStudies #BitchPlanet

In the past, I've received interview & speaking invitations from TV & radio stations, podcasts, websites, documentarians, and libraries, but lately, I'm really struggling to figure out which requests are legit because so many emails sound like AI. Is anyone else having this problem.
