Beyond the need to replace federal funds, with this administration in place, federal support will no longer be a mark of distinction beyond that of private giving; it will be tainted with the thought that you may have had to abandon your principles in various ways to receive that support.
I think there needs to be a new push for private giving to research. One reason is to replace the now-tenuous federal support, which universities won't care about so much anyway with the new 15% cap on indirect costs. 1/2
Wouldn't it have been more efficient just to change the meaning of DEI on the web sites to the new goals of Divestment, Exclusivity, and Intrusion?

Here is my guess about the BlueSky business strategy: build slowly so as to get established without alarming X too much; wait for X to impose a subscription fee for everyone; and then open the floodgates to the new free site.
