@kirstenanker.bsky.social and I were able to sit down with Jules Bugiel at CKUT 90.3FM this afternoon to talk about the current state of faculty unionization and contract bargaining at McGill. (Scroll to 4:33 here to listen to to the interview): archives.ckut.ca/archives/128...
Academic Fashion Report, First Day of School 2026-27 Edition: After a summer in LA full of travel, bike rides and trips to the farmers’ market with the kids, and never enough writing, today was my first day back with my students at @mcgillarts.bsky.social 1/
The actual moment when Popper interrupted me on @yourmorningctv.bsky.social to discuss the national rail dispute #academiclife
#BrockU is hosting the annual @cawls-acets.bsky.social conference next year. Check out the call for proposals here: cawls.ca/en/2027-annu... #labourstudies #canlab @brocklabour.bsky.social
Celebrating two years since Popper’s surprise guest appearance on @yourmorningctv.bsky.social to provide additional expert commentary on the national rail dispute 🐱
Academic Conference Fashion Report, Alt-ASA 2026 Edition, Day 4: Today was day 2 of the alternative conference organized by @soc4pal.bsky.social around the theme of “Resisting Authoritarianism: Global Solidarity and Democratic Futures.” 1/
Academic Conference Fashion Report, Alt-ASA 2026 Edition, Day 3: Today was day 1 of the alternative conference organized by @soc4pal around the theme of “Resisting Authoritarianism: Global Solidarity and Democratic Futures.” 1/
Academic Conference Fashion Report, Alt-ASA 2026 Edition, Day 2: Today was full of meetings with editors, co-authors, and former students, followed by a trip up to the Midtown Hilton to join a few hundred of my fellow sociologists to protest ASA leadership’s violation of democratic process 1/
Academic Conference Fashion Report, Alt-ASA 2026 Edition, Day 1: The Report is back under unusual circumstances, with a boycott called by @soc4pal.bsky.social to protest ASA leadership’s violation of democratic process 1/
Not quite sure why this is popping up in my feed today, because IIRC 1) this was 26 years ago, not 5 years ago; and 2) it was June 1, not July 26. I’m pretty sure this was taken at the anti-FTAA protest in Windsor, Ontario, just months after the anti-WTO Battle of Seattle the previous November. 1/
Remembering that time seven years ago when I debated Whole Foods founder and CEO John Mackie in a Las Vegas hotel on the merits of capitalism vs. socialism as part of FreedomFest, a big libertarian gathering. 1/
Check out the full program of our alternative conference with over 60 sessions (!) in NYC next month. Register today! Program: tinyurl.com/ResistSoc2026 Registration: tinyurl.com/ResistSoc #BoycottASA
Just got word that my proposed session on “Labour, Power, and Politics” has been approved for the XXI ISA World Congress of Sociology, which will be held in Gwangju, South Korea from July 4-10, 2027. 1:
Proud to be part of this initiative bringing together 70 labour scholars from across Canada criticizing recent governmental attacks on unions. Published today in @theglobeandmail.com and @lapresse.ca #canlab #cdnpoli 1/
Sociologists stand in solidarity for a democratic ASA and a free Palestine. Sign the boycott pledge, and look out for alternative sessions & organizing events outside of ASA for folks who will be in the NYC area. #BoycotttASA
I had a chance to review @ericblanc.bsky.social ‘s latest book for Contemporary Sociology. Worker-to-worker organizing is no panacea for reversing labour’s flagging fortunes, and Eric is acutely aware of this. 1/
We're excited to announce an alternative conference for those boycotting ASA! "Resisting Authoritarianism: Global Solidarity & Democratic Futures" will take place in NYC on Aug 10-11 at the CUNY Graduate Center. RSVP today: tinyurl.com/ResistSoc #BoycottASA
Still not fully recovered from last week’s @labornotes.bsky.social conference in Chicago. Despite taking place in a time of huge challenges for unions and the working class in general, it was an inspiring place to take stock, recharge, and gear up for the battles ahead. 1/
@eidlin.bsky.social rocking S4P's pin and showing support for Palestine 🇵🇸 We will be sharing more pins at our alternative conference in August. Another great reason to #boycottASA😉 There are many ways to support, and we appreciate how sociologists are showing up in this moment!
Academic Conference Fashion Report, @cawls-acets.bsky.social 2026 Edition, Day 3: The conference wrapped with some great panels. Most notable for me was a two-part session on “The State of Canadian Labour” 1/
Pro tip: if you ever get the chance to hear @prof-deleon.bsky.social give a talk, sprint to it. He is an amazing speaker, incredible scholar, and all around great human. Thanks for the great talk and congratulations on the book prize Prof de Leon!
It was great to reconnect with @prof-deleon.bsky.social at the @cawls-acets.bsky.social meeting in Winnipeg. Not only did we get to catch up & strategize together, but he got to pick up his hardware for the Leo Panitch Book Prize, & deliver the keynote. A true friend, colleague, and comrade ✊❤️
David Camfield and I go back three decades, to the days of the New Socialist Group and the various Days of Action citywide strikes across Ontario in the mid-1990s. 1/

Looking forward to gathering in Winnipeg with my fellow laboUr scholars for the annual meeting of the Canadian Association for Work and Labour Studies! See you 🔜 #CanLab
We are finally seeing ASA leadership recognize the ASA meeting boycott and its impacts, to the point where they're extending the deadline to June 15, and committing to an early council meeting to "work towards a resolution." Keep up the pressure! As we've been saying, boycotts work!
