There are a lot of elderly narcissists in our politics - it’s worth noting that narcissists don’t age like the rest of us, because they don’t carry anyone or anything. They have a unique (dis) ability to experience power without stress.

What depoliticisation precludes many Russian citizens from seeing is that Putin’s propaganda is all about how he can’t stop losing. It’s an endless victim narrative about how, over and over, he can’t stop getting tricked by the West.

From the POV of Mearsheimer’s realism, Putin’s reasons for war are invisible - because they are regime security, not national security reasons. But there is something else: Mearsheimer is an expert on how wars are fought, but he's not an expert on the operational realities of this war.

Trump still dislikes Zelensky. He doesn't like his raspy voice. He doesn't like his clothes - he thinks Zelensky looks homeless, and therefore, unhygienic. He doesn't like that Zelensky is short. Putin's height, of course, doesn't bother him because he idealises Putin. 1/3

Month by month we’re are getting closer to the age of white identity politics in the West. It will peak in the 2030s. We can defeat it. But currently, we are losing to it. Our main move remains to say that such movements are racist and on the wrong side of history. 1/2

On Musk’s attack on London: I am fully wheelchair-bound. Indeed, I am often too ill even to sit in the wheelchair. And yet I would be perfectly happy to ride it through the backstreets of East London at midnight. London remains, by the standards of the world’s great cities, a relatively safe place.
