Af least right now the idea Jason Varitek stays in the organization is not necessarily true. One player described him as “furious.” “He was fired. He ain’t coming back.”
Asked Breslow if Cora was given the option of staying with different coaches. He said he would not get into specifics, which seems telling.
I caught up with Jeff Passan about his new ESPN and Omaha Productions produced MLB podcast, one that really stands out. Here’s how it came together and what it’s about. www.forbes.com/sites/mauryb...

Ballot #182 is from our 34th first-time voter, Jane Lee. She checks the names of the five top performing candidates of the cycle. Among the 34 rookie voters, Beltrán remains a perfect 34/34, Andruw is 31/34, Utley is 29/34, Félix is 26/34 and Pettitte is 24/34. In the Tracker: tracker.fyi
Unsurprising given he was popped not once, but twice for PEDs.
Based on our estimate of 424 total ballots cast, Manny Ramírez is mathematically eliminated from being elected to the Hall of Fame by the baseball writers in his 10th and final year of eligibility on the BBWAA ballot.
With 178 ballots revealed/~42.0% known: Beltrán 89.9% Andruw 83.7% - Utley 68.0% Félix 59.0% Pettitte 57.3% A-Rod 44.4% Abreu 40.4% Manny 40.4% Hamels 32.6% Pedroia 27.0% Buehrle 23.6% Rollins 23.6% Wright 19.7% K-Rod 11.8% Vizquel 11.2% Torii 5.1% - Braun 2.2% EE 1.1% Choo/Markakis/Pence 0.6%
Can’t make this stuff up. Alex Bregman was in the process of negotiating his deal with the Cubs just as the Red Sox were finishing up their Fenway Fest. Now Bregman will be in Chicago next weekend for the Cubs Convention.
With 122 ballots revealed/~28.5% known: Beltrán 87.7% Andruw 83.6% - Utley 64.8% Félix 58.2% Pettitte 54.9% A-Rod 50.0% Manny 45.1% Abreu 39.3% Hamels 30.3% Rollins 28.7% Pedroia 24.6% Buehrle 22.1% Wright 18.9% K-Rod 13.9% Vizquel 12.3% - Torii 4.1% Braun 3.3% EE 1.6% Choo/Pence 0.8% tracker.fyi
Inspired by @dr-tracy.bsky.social and with a major h/t to @tonycal.bsky.social, here a chart showing Bobby Abreu's 6th and 7th (current) year on the ballot versus Larry Walker's 7th, 8th, 9th and 10th. Last year and this, Abreu is mirroring Walker's results, but he's a year ahead of Walker's pace. 👀
Net gained/lost votes through 80 ballots (~18.7% of the vote): Félix +18 Pettitte +10 Utley +8 Abreu +7 Pedroia +7 Beltrán +6 Andruw +5 A-Rod +5 K-Rod +4 Wright +4 Buehrle +3 Manny +3 Rollins +3 Vizquel +1 Hunter +0 tracker.fyi
This is likely due to a large number of first-time voters and shifting views on a weak ballot this year.
Is that Félix chart totally wild? Yes it is. The best comps I can think of are Larry Walker's 2018 to 2019 (25.7% increase through 70 ballots) and Scott Rolen's 2019 to 2020 (24.3% increase through 70 ballots). Félix is 37.2% above where he was through 70 ballots last year.
And year over year tracking at 70 ballots for Félix Hernández, Andy Pettitte and Bobby Abreu:
Year over year tracking at 70 ballots for Carlos Beltrán, Andruw Jones and Chase Utley:
Multiple candidates are off to hot starts when looking at year-over-year results through 40 ballots (Abreu, Utley, Jones, etc.), but nothing compares to: Félix Hernández through 40 ballots, 2025: 17.5% Félix Hernández through 40 ballots, 2026: 55.0%
Going on KMOX in St Louis NOW to talk DAZN possible purchase of the FanDuel Sports Networks.
With 33 ballots revealed/~7.7% of the total vote known: Beltrán 78.8% Andruw 78.8% --- Utley 57.6% Félix 51.5% Pettitte 48.5% A-Rod 42.4% Abreu 39.4% Manny 33.3% Pedroia 30.3% Hamels 27.3% Rollins 27.3% Buehrle 24.2% Vizquel 24.2% Wright 15.2% K-Rod 15.2% Braun 12.1% --- Hunter 3.0% tracker.fyi

Going on @sportsnet590thefan.bsky.social now to talk coming and goings in MLB, especially the AL East coming out of the Winter Meetings.
This is worth addressing… I gave Beltran a pass after he got and lost the Mets managerial position and hasn’t been offered since. The difference is PED suspended users are affecting game outcome every game. The situation w/the Astros was only in Houston and not adopted by every player. (Cont)
How does Carlos Beltran cheating and getting an informal punishment after he was done playing absolve him, while the real punishments handed down to PED users don't absolve them? Where's the consistency?
Ballot #25 is from first-time voter Maury Brown, the sixth first-timer to reveal a ballot. Beltrán and Félix are 6-for-6 among rookie voters while Hamels, Jones and Pettitte are 5-for-6. Maury's ballot explainer column: www.forbes.com/sites/mauryb...
