It’s me, hi, I’m the problem, it’s me. New to Seattle area ☔️ and missing San Diego ☀️. Van 🚐 life.

Today’s #iwantitforfree is an honorable mention. This sales dude emails me saying “what’s the cheapest way I can attend your event” blah blah blah and his company does huge contracts. People think you’ll give them a break for being a potential sponsor but the ppl who ask these Q’s never do.

Today's #IWantItForFree is from the archives, and I'm naming names. UCSD's microMBA program used to have a "coffee chat" that was PART OF THE CURRICULUM and they relied on biotech professionals to mentor for free. I did for many years and when I asked to be paid my hourly rate, they said no.

Today I’m remembering an #Iwantitforfree from the archives (eg my 🧠): folks who complain about the free newsletter I send. Someone complained about the ads, someone complained about the content and said they’d “take their business elsewhere” … um, ok it’s free…

Today’s “I want it for free” is a long email talking about an NSF funded project where they want me to connect them with my network (for free because… it’s NSF funded!). I look up the email domain and it’s a financial services co… Time for me to write my “what I don’t do for free” post!

THIS IS THE WAY. Everyone gets their knickers in a twist when I say we can’t sci-comm our way out of this mess…but maybe you’ll listen to the more eloquent and measured @edyong209.bsky.social! This isn’t happening because people don’t appreciate the brilliance of the double helix structure.

You cannot keep your head down and expect to sneak through the next three years unaffected. We MUST come together and say “NO!” Suppression of freedoms *always* starts at universities and in the press. You’ve got like 5 seconds to wake up.

“I’m emotionally shellshocked right now,” said one professor in the Texas Tech system. “What does it say about academic freedom? It says we don’t have it.” www.nytimes.com/2025/09/26/u...

Speaking of voices under attack…can we be just as loud about Black journalists and comedians who are silenced, even by our so-called liberal outlets. • Joy Reid • Don Lemon • Melissa Harris-Perry • Tiffany Cross • Jemele Hill • Marc Lamont Hill • Karen Attiah • Amber Ruffin
