Reporting by @dgoold.bsky.social on Twitter that Hunter Dobbins had Tommy John yesterday. It’s his second.

I cover the St. Louis Cardinals for the Belleville News-Democrat. Everything else is a take specially designed for you.
I present to you an imminent future in which John Mozeliak works for Stan Kroenke.
Stan Kroenke is acquiring the Los Angeles Angels from the Moreno family. Kroenke will now own controlling interest of the Rams and Angels in L.A., in addition to the Denver Nuggets, Colorado Avalanche and Arsenal.
Hancel Rincón, Victor Scott II and Leo Bernal are three kinds of September Guy — system soldier, “show us what you learned,” and a debuting prospect. There’s a need for all three to get something difference from the experience: words-about-birds.beehiiv.com/p/as-rosters...
As rosters expand small, the Cardinals take a big look at their options
Three unique opportunities to look at players in three different spots

While I was in the pool, transactions went official: Bernal, Scott II recalled, Rincón selected, Crooks optioned. 40-man is full.
Managed to choke through “estoy trabajando en beisbol” with my Uber driver this morning, only to discover he is from César Prieto’s hometown in Cuba. Just doing some Guy chat across languages. How can you not be romantic, etc.
I had to skedaddle in the seventh to catch a flight, and it appears I missed departure for rookie dress up day:
Two-out single by Lowe brings in one of the two Gastelum walks, Pirates lead 5-2 in the seventh.
Liberatore exiting after throwing 107 pitches in 5.2 innings. That's the highest pitch count in a single outing for any Cardinal this season, besting the 105 Liberatore put up on April 13.
Alec Burleson drives a sharp single to right for his 100th RBI, and a rousing ovation from this sparse crowd.
Iván Herrera caps a two-out rally with a single back through the box to cut the Pirates lead to 4-1.
Urías clanks a routine pop up that would've ended the third and Cruz trots around. 3-0 Pirates
Esmerlyn Valdez pops a homer opposite way to the little triangle cutout next to the pole. 2-0 Pirates in the second.
José Fermín found a way for the *Cardinals* to weaponize Iván Herrera's throws down to second. Deked that the high and wide throw was into center and Oneil Cruz fully bit, but managed to scamper back and avoid the tag.
JJ Wetherholt said he’s had some pain in his wrist for the last month or so that the doctors have chalked up to frequent usage, most he’s ever played in a year. They attempted rest and recovery but the pain has intensified the last few days.
Here is the Sunday lineup: Torres 7 Herrera 2 Burleson 3 Walker 9 Gorman DH Fermín 4 Church 8 Urías 5 Saggese 6 Liberatore 1
Big injury news: JJ Wetherholt is going on the IL with tendinitis in his right wrist. César Prieto recalled.
Modern roster management means most players debut no longer than within a couple days after their first call up. Rule 5 picks can be the last remaining exception to that rule, and it took Cade Winquest 15 games to finally get rid of his debut patch: words-about-birds.beehiiv.com/p/peel-the-p...

The righty reliever redefined Rule 5 purgatory.

The Cardinals had as many hits as the Pirates committed errors today, which is roughly how a team can play as sloppily as the Bucs did and still leave with a win. Lots of missed opportunities and one big surrendered homer. Rubber match tomorrow.
Three straight two-out hits against Fernandez in the ninth and it's 6-2 heading to the bottom of the inning.
The Pirates have made errors on three consecutive balls in play. It is 5-2 with two runners in scoring position. There is truly no experience like Bucco Ball in the dog days.
Brycen Mautz is the first Cardinals reliever to record at least eight strikeouts in an appearance since Daniel Ponce de Leon had nine on June 29, 2019.
Brycen Mautz got nine outs. Eight were strikeouts. He allowed four runs. Mixed bag!
In his 15th game on an active roster with a debut patch stuck to his arm, Cade Winquest is warming to actually, really, truly, finally make his big league debut.
Rafael Flores blasts off for a three-run homer with two out in the fifth. Now 5-1 Pirates.
Gonzalez singles to cash the error, 2-1 Pirates in the fourth.
Mangum single to left and it gets under Báez, but he recovers in time to throw him out sliding into third -- for now. Review coming.
The Pirates are on their third pitcher of the third inning. The Cardinals will have their second pitcher of the day open the fourth. Who says we don't get September baseball anymore?
