The PM's aim to get everyone sleeping rough off the streets by this Christmas is the kind of bold leadership we can get behind. The signs are encouraging. At this Autumn’s budget, we need that same unwavering ambition to getting councils building homes for their communities. shltr.org.uk/jfEdE

Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, wants to end rough sleeping by Christmas. But his plan must be backed by a council housing revolution.

Yesterday's announcement on the first wave of funding through the Social and Affordable Homes Programme had a greater focus on social rent. 🙌 We're moving in the right direction - but to truly end the housing emergency we need 90,000 social homes a year, for ten years. shltr.org.uk/BfEfa

The #HousingEmergency is caused by successive governments failure to build enough genuinely affordable social homes - not by who accesses social housing. This policy does nothing to deliver new social homes, which is what we desperately need. www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/poli...

Let’s set the record straight, there are already strict rules on eligibility for social housing. You need to be legally settled, have recourse to public funds, pass a local connection test & have reached the top of the waiting list. #SocialHomesNotScapegoating www.bbc.co.uk/news/article...

Our message to Andy Burnham? Ending rough sleeping’s a great start but with thousands of children stuck without a home, in damaging temporary accommodation, he must go further. It’s time to get councils building again and end the housing emergency for good. www.mirror.co.uk/news/politic...

'Burnham is right about ending rough sleeping - but problem is much bigger'

'Bring back hope' is the new Prime Minister’s message. And honestly? We’re here for it. But hope needs somewhere to land. 🏠 That means building the social homes this country urgently needs.

'Any administration that is serious about fixing life’s foundations must start by delivering a new generation of social rent homes' ...and that means giving councils the power and resources to build again. (article has a paywall) www.thetimes.com/uk/politics/...

Wipe the debt and let councils build again

176,130 children are homeless. Councils delivered just 12,000 social rent homes last year, crushed by £29bn of historical debt. Clear it and let them build.

For too long, housing benefit has not kept pace with soaring rents. This is driving record numbers of people into homelessness as they're priced out of their homes. The government must unfreeze housing benefit urgently so it covers the true cost of renting. Everyone needs a home.

No one should be criminalised for being homeless. Scrapping the Vagrancy Act is long overdue. From rough sleeping to children growing up without a home in temporary accommodation, it’s time to end homelessness for good. We need 90k new social homes a year for 10 years to end the housing emergency.

🚨 Breaking news: from today, it's no longer a crime to sleep rough in England and Wales. The Vagrancy Act has finally been repealed. For more than 200 years, this archaic law criminalised people for sleeping rough or begging. But no more.

NEW: Andy Burnham says he wants the biggest council housebuilding programme since the post-war period. He's right that councils have a huge role to play. A new generation of council-built social homes has the potential to utterly transform our country and provide that stable basis for millions.
