Of Iván Szelényi's many contributions, I most often return to his work with Gil Eyal and Eleanor Townsley on the competing projects of capitalism without capitalists and capitalists without capitalism (i.e., market and regulatory discipline), as informative of the present era in the US as well.

Iván Szelényi (1938-2026), a towering figure in sociology, one of the finest global intellectuals Hungary and Eastern Europe has ever produced, has died. Rest in peace and solidarity. 1/6

A national-social [Smer, SNS, Republika] vs civic-bourgeoisie [PS, SaS, D] axis emerges as the main one (when scaling the voter transfers excl. Szövetség and ĽSNS). The second axis pits abstainers against the two blocs' cores, perhaps associated with the respondents' investment in politics.

A 2 dim coordinate plot from the correspondence analysis of large (10k or more) voter transfers from the 2023 election to the summer of 2026 as estimated by Ipsos Slovakia.

Republika (ESN) gained nearly a quarter million voters of Mr Fico's gov't coalition parties Smer, Hlas, and SNS since the 2023 elections, per Ipsos. Back then, Republika won 141k votes and fell just below the 5% threshold. It seems to be Mr Musk's favorite Slovakian party, too.

For comparison, the then governing Smer slid down <20% in the 2020 election which it lost. Then dropped to ~10% when Mr Pellegrini unsuccessfully challenged Mr Fico for the party leadership and left with many high-profile members to found Hlas. By the 2023 election, Smer was back to ~20%.

Re DSIT and DBT: The UK's R&D spend in the business enterprise sector, just like in the higher education, private non-profit, and government sectors combined, was below that of not just Germany, but France as well, in terms of % of GDP, by the time the UK stopped reporting data to Eurostat in 2019.
