Commercially produced bananas are propagated clonally through cuttings: we've engineered the seeds in the fruit to be tiny and edible vs. wild banana seeds (shown). So, when "Panama disease" hit in the 1950's, it made all non-resistant cultivars commercially extinct. Let's talk about it.

A seeded banana from Miami Fruit. A human hand holds a banana split along the short axis, revealing dark black 'pips' or banana seeds occupying about 25% of the space inside the fruit. In the background, a board holds banana bunches on the grassy ground.

this isn't the worst possible story on the topic, but there is literally zero mention of the more than 60 documented US deaths using these systems, or really anything about their safety at all beyond the usual assurances from users that it "does 95% of driving" and is "safer than they are"

I'm more bullish on autonomous vehicle technology than some people on this site, but if I were in a Tesla and someone put it in "self-driving" mode, I would immediately demand to be let out at the next corner. www.sfchronicle.com/bayarea/arti...

Rage 🧵: A few years ago, our neighbors complained to the city about the plant growth on a steep slope in our backyard. It’s so steep that lawn care companies told me they won’t mow it. The city didn’t care. They threatened us with thousands of dollars in fines. I ended up writing about it:

Saw someone refer to Bonne Maman jelly as something for rich kids, and I need folks to update their stereotypes and understanding of the shelf price situation. Bonne Maman isn’t rich, it’s midgrade now.

Fifteen years ago, in the classroom, wikipedia was annoying because it was hard to describe to kids who relied on it why it wasn't a good source to cite in a paper. Now, it's the final remaining example of citational responsibility any of them have ever seen.

Lowkey excellent thing about Wikipedia: accurately describing the extremism and lies of right-wingers because its sole concern is provable truth, while the media tiptoes around accurately describing whats happening to avoid appearing “biased” against the extremists and liars

#akleg I find this all quite disrespectful to the voters and volunteers who got you there. Dropout if you have a scandal or a health problem or whatever but otherwise be part of the conversation, make a pitch for your policy agenda, support other candidates who will carry those ideas if they win.

After Alaska’s ‘final four’ primary, a silent primary may decide who’s on the ballot in November, writes @alaska.bsky.social for the @alaskabeacon.com alaskabeacon.com/2026/08/14/a...

Medievalists/Europeanists: if these two historic years of flooding are not already on your teaching timelines, they need to be. New narratives of the climatic & epidemiological histories of the late Middle Ages are forming, & this kind of evidence will be central. #MedievalSky #ClimateHistory 🧪🗃️

Latest addition to the 2nd Plague Pandemic bibliography: Andrea Kiss et al., "Cascading continental-scale floods across Europe in 1342–1343." www.nature.com/articles/s41.... The bibliography has always had a "Climate" section, b/c crises come when & how they come.

A disposable thin-plastic water bottle you get at like a gas station, like Evian or Poland spring or whatever, ARE NOT DESIGNED TO BE REUSED. They’re not meant to be protective or re-seal or hold water for long periods of time. They’re one and done. Once they get warm after being opened = TRASH

Once you open a plastic water bottle and don’t finish it just throw it the fuck out. Do not let it set and drink from it again later. It is potentially deadly. Unless you put it straight in the fridge that shit is DANGEROUS.

In Juneau on Thursday, the high temperature was 80º, setting a record for the date and marking only the second 80-degree day this year in Alaska's state capital. Today could be the third day to hit the mark (and maybe the last of the year?) #akwx

18 June Count Binface got 95 votes in a parliamentary by-election Two months later 14 August he got 9,455 votes. Assuming this rate of growth continues he will have ~945,500 votes in the US mid terms and the whole population of Earth will vote for him in 2027

We say, Airbud style, that there's nothing in the rules that says you can't have Bruce Campbell on the team for a notoriously hard pub quiz that has a Bruce Campbell round. Bruce points out there's a John Carpenter round. says he'll give Empire John's phone number but he may not get here in time /8

The film quiz organizers are obviously a bit confused/surprised/overjoyed but also a bit embarrassed. Soon clear why when they list oit the rounds. There's both an Evil Dead video round AND a specific Bruce Campbell round. Empire's cries of foul grow louder. /7

few minutes before the horror quiz starts, door opens and in rushes the friend. looks around. sees us/the Editor. smiles. waves and runs over. "guys so sorry am i late? i had to work out the metro" etc etc Bruce Campbell. BRUCE CAMPBELL. the 4th member of our quiz team is BRUCE CAMPBELL /5
