‘English cricketers don’t always have that fight’: Simon Harmer on lessons from a decade in county game

The Essex and South Africa spinner has taken more Championship wickets than anyone else since arriving in 2017 – but says 18 teams can reward mediocrity For 10 seasons, few have earned the right to comment on English cricket more than Simon Harmer. Because for 10 seasons, no one has taken more County Championship wickets than the South African off-spinner who arrived at Essex in 2017 on a six-month contract, his international career stalled and his options narrowing fast. He has since become one of the great imports of the English game: 522 first-class wickets and counting for Essex, two County Championship titles, a Bob Willis Trophy, a return to South Africa’s Test side and, perhaps most importantly, contentment. “My journey has been bumpy,” Harmer says from a sun-drenched beer garden near the Oval. “I can say now that I’m at peace with it.” Continue reading...

Rohit Sharma's India is in the conversation for the best white ball team of all time. Their batters are artists. Their bowlers are wizards. I should love them. It's a shame that I don't. Latest yarn for the G: www.theguardian.com/sport/2025/m...

The Spin | We should love this India team but Champions Trophy felt a hollow triumph

Australia and South Africa take the WTC seriously. That is why they're in the final. England don't. That's why they're not in the final. OK, maybe more to it than that. My yarn on the Proteas' shot at glory for the Guardian:

Across 133 there's never been a Springbok like Salmaan Moerat. Politically engaged, a descendant of rugby royalty, a trailblazer in more ways than one. Profile on the big unit for RugbyPass: www.rugbypass.com/plus/salmaan...

Salmaan Moerat: 'I’ve not really processed the magnitude of leading the Springboks'

The politically engaged first Muslim captain of South Africa is a unique character with his background, ability and leadership credentials.
