"I don't quite know how he landed at that conclusion. It's truly a hop, skip and a jump," Zohran Mamdani says on ex-MSNBC host Joy Reid's show when asked about ex-Gov. David Paterson's claim comparing the mayor to George Wallace because of his rhetoric about Benjamin Netanyahu.

"Entities like Citibank, New York Life Insurance & some others that have been here since the early days of the colony that became New York directly made their founding profits on the financing of enslavement," Get Free's Anthony Vidal Torres said. www.nytimes.com/2026/07/30/n...

The mayor said in recent interviews that it was important to acknowledge the city’s role in slavery but that he could not commit to payouts before his racial equity commission completes its report.

A Department of Finance spokesperson now says a about 17,000 NYC property owners have been hit with letters informing them they may be on the hook for the pied a terre tax. That's less than the 31,000 properties that the DOF's own data showed last week could be targeted.

Department of Finance Commissioner Richard Lee says the city is reaching out to co-op owners that have been hit with pied-a-terre tax letters since some of them may not actually be required to pay the new levies. “It’s a little bit of a new territory for us,” he admits.

New: Outside advisers to Zohran Mamdani started urging him already in 2025 to stop making public threats about arresting Benjamin Netanyahu, warning that his focus on the issue could put him in a politically precarious spot, per two sources. www.politico.com/news/2026/07...

The early recommendation from outside advisers calls into question why Mamdani kept threatening to make the arrest.

A spokesperson for Council Speaker Julie Menin says the body is "concerned by the speed and process through which" Mayor Zohran Mamdani's Charter Revision Commission has advanced five ballot questions for November, warning of "unintended consequences."

Mayor Zohran Mamdani notably refuses to say when exactly he was informed by his lawyers that NYC doesn't have the authority to arrest Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. "I have answered the question," he says (he didn't).

Mayor Zohran Mamdani is appointing Anthony Shorris, a de Blasio administration alum, as the new head of NYC's Economic Development Corporation after a lengthy search. Notably: Lina Khan, a key outside adviser to Mamdani who has no formal role in his admin, is here.

New: A corporate entity co-founded by Council Speaker Julie Menin's husband owes NYC more than $246,000 in back taxes — an awkward revelation for Menin, who criticized Mamdani for how he handled the city government's cash flow problems. www.politico.com/newsletters/...
