On this day in 1847, artist Norman Garstin was born in Ireland. After careers in engineering, architecture and diamond prospecting, he settled in Penzance in 1889. He taught Harold Harvey and his daughter Alethea. His famous The Rain it Raineth Every Day captures the Penzance promenade.

Stanhope Forbes’s The Seine Boat (1904) is currently on display in Gallery 5. On long-term loan, the ‘seine’ net shown in the boat was used to catch pilchards, while the ‘tuck’ net, used alongside it, can be seen in the boat behind.

It's World Elephant Day! 🐘🌍⁠ This iconic photo by William Colenso (1845-1942) captures Circus Elephants marching down Chapel Street to Abbey Slip for a dip in the sea. ⁠ While we appreciate the historical value, we do not condone the mistreatment of animals in circuses.

Today we were delighted to welcome the descendants of local diver Omar Pascoe. It was a pleasure to show them Omar's diving suit, helmet and pump, preserved in the Penlee House Gallery & Museum Collection, and share the story of his work maintaining Penzance's inner harbour.

It was a pleasure to welcome our local MP, Andrew George, to Penlee House to see our current exhibition, Making Her Mark: A Celebration of Women in Art. The exhibition celebrates the creativity and achievements of women artists and runs until 27 September.

Work of the Week! Coombe Valley Factory, Newlyn by Adrian Ryan Once home to a stamping mill, Sanatogen and Cornish Food Products, the factory produced fish-based fertiliser—much to the dismay of locals who complained about the smell! The chimneys came down in the 1960s.
