It’s easy to think writing is mainly the transcription of ideas you already have—that is, until you try to write something worthwhile, and you find what you thought were saying transform into something far more interesting in the process. Nex Benedict should still be here with us today. Nex was a 16-year-old non-binary high school student who loved nature and enjoyed drawing, reading, and playing Minecraft. Trans and non-binary youth deserve to be safe in school, just like every other child in America.

In 2022 I started tracking changes in how news outlets were describing trans people, and set up a bot to record every article pushed to the Google News index based on a handful of search phrases, including “biological sex” in both the US and UK. The amount in 2023 alone was absolutely staggering.
