The Art of Saying No by DeMisty D. Bellinger: Chapter One: They ask you to do something. Apologize and say no. "I'm sorry, but I can't." Give a reason. "I have a bunion." Suggest someone else. "Did'ya asked Ye? He doesn't seem too busy."

Leave it to this federal admin to make one wake up cursing and worried about humanity. Heard it on NPR when the alarm went off. A public execution. A livestreamed shooting squad. Fuck you, Pete Hegseth, you insane Nazi-esque sadistic asshole.

1. Tonight at Gillette Stadium, Zach Bryan, one of the biggest country music artists in the world, wore a Free Palestine shirt onstage. Gillette Stadium is owned by Robert Kraft, who pushed Ed Sheeran and his promoter to drop Macklemore from his tour. Bryan isn’t just a major country artist.

I really want to leave Fb, but I have so many friends and family on the site. Also, it's one of the few places where I share my publications. When Twitter with to hell, I lost a lot of great writing and editing folks and a platform on which to promote my work. TL;DR: I hate Zuckerburg's smarminess.

Three good things from this week: • I'm kind of writing again. • My registration to vote is certain and I will be using that vote to make D.C. make more sense! • I have a reading in Sudbury, Massachusetts on Sunday, Sept. 20th! www.jamesleonard.org/products/sud...

I remembered my grandmother's phone voice when calling my daughter's school this morning. My grandma was from the South, but lived in Wisconsin, where she moved during the Great Migration. Normally, she sounded like Black Dolly Parton, but on the phone with strangers, she sounded like a white lady.

Grateful to the Massachusetts Teachers Association, the Massachusetts State College Association, and the National Education Association! I am a proud member of all three! Thank your local unions for this day off (if you have it; hopefully you have it). Let's hear it for workers' rights, y'all!

Those little cloth bags that your sheet set comes in? I use them to: • Cover shoes when they are out of season to keep dust and spiders out (don't judge my housekeeping!) • Travel bag for shoes or other things, like dirty laundry • Bag for hair tools. How do you use them?

Our society's unfathomable cruelty to homeless people is not just morally unjustifiable, but more expensive than housing people would be. Cruelty against the homeless is an unaffordable luxury. Abandoning homeless people to avoid offending the Protestant work ethic is an unaffordable luxury.

ProPublica spoke to dozens of people who had lived in homeless encampments when cities cleared them out in “sweeps.” We distributed notecards so people could tell us about the toll in their own words. ➡️ This is what they wrote:

Handwritten notecard. Prompt at the top asks: What object was most devastating for you to lose, and how have you been coping? Answer below: Dentures. Were thrown away and coping isn't somthing I can do. It’s made me feel ugly, unworthy, can’t go get a job with no teeth. So how can get off the streets until another pair can be made?

Is it crazy to post on social media that we need to spend less time talking to each other on social media? I do my share of doomscrolling. But what I've learned during my lifetime is that democracy requires having difficult conversations — and having our ideas challenged.
