My least favourite thing in macOS is this fucking badge on the system settings app icon in the dock. It means that there's a system update available, but when you click on it, then click on the "software updates available" thing in the sidebar (which also has […] [Original post on fedi.gosha.net]
In many ways, Captain Picard was a big role model for me growing up, and a huge part of what made him so compelling as a role model was how Patrick Stewart made the character come alive. I’ve been reading his Wikipedia article, and it seems like he had a good, full life, which is heartening […]

[GenAI, claude, local models] I spend my days at work bossing claude opus 5.5 around, and I wanted to see what kind of model I could run on my own laptop that doesn't depend on renting compute from anthropic and the like. Well it's not great. I can use ollama run qwen 3.5 (the 4b variant) on […]

Officially lost my job for economic reasons, last day is November 17. My skills ratings were higher than others, but having no kids is what put me on the shortlist. I’ll take a few weeks to rest, and look for a new job. I’ll soon reach 12 years’ experience in web development, formerly as a frontend developer and UI/UX designer, now working as a Product Owner/Project Manager on a fully remote or hybrid basis. I also have 15 years’ experience in voluntary work and 8 years’ experience as a freelancer, in addition to my salaried roles. I’m looking for a small team that needs to delegate administrative tasks so they can focus on their own work. #FediHire #Getfedihired https://thomasorus.com/hire

" sleepless in __________ " is my favourite #EpikHigh album, it's so rewarding to play on loop for a few hours! #nowplaying https://youtube.com/playlist?list=OLAK5uy_mvfm9Kxb53znUA0_vdixbal1rrHH6dFI8
Either I'm going mad or my kid has changed my kindle settings and I can't figure out which ones. The kindle used to show a certain type of illustrations on the lock screen, like a close-up of a bunch of pencils, or details of calligraphy, or something like that. Now it suddenly shows kind of […]

Me, an ancient dinosaur 🦕: who tf would want a touchscreen MacBook? I hate fingerprints on my screen, and I hate it when people touch my screen to point at something My 4yo daughter 🐣, trying hard to tap on a non-touch display she found somewhere: papa, this one is broken!
Love to get a parcel from Japan, especially when it’s another wonderful book from @Luismendo 🥰
They’re removing buses from Oxford street and making a stretch of it pedestrian only, which is a good thing, but that place is still my idea of hell

I'm getting a feel for Zig 😄 It's close enough to C that I'm not in completely unfamiliar territory, and can get away with looking things up as I poke around and try to make things work. One fun thing is that there's no concept of C-style headers (afaict), so […] [Original post on fedi.gosha.net]
E is sick these days with fever and a bad cough, and wakes up at more or less exactly 3:30am, and eventually goes back to sleep at more or less exactly 4am. Today he woke up at 2:30am instead, and that’s how I realised summer time is over and we are gonna live in the dark for half a year now. I […]

Apple Music's 404 page has a working original iPod on it. I loved that thing! https://music.apple.com/404
Had an okay interaction with the Met Police today?? Yesterday someone called me saying they were a police officer wanting to ask me questions about a case, but my spider-sense started tingling, so I told them I’d reach out myself through the police website to confirm they’re legit. So I […]

Merveilles folks: it seems that when I migrated to my new instance, some of the people I follow got follow requests instead of being carried over. Could you please check your follow requests and approve mine if you see it? 🙏

A couple of years ago I was fed up with the pressure I was feeling at my $DAYJOB, so I started spending 30 minutes in the morning writing code as play, building Astrovox, a software synth from scratch in C. I really enjoyed it, I felt competent and recovered […] [Original post on fedi.gosha.net]
