Canada's new national security plan in plain English

Canada's new national security plan in plain English

Ottawa just released Canada’s first national security strategy in more than 20 years, and almost nobody has read it. So I did. It’s a 13-page national security framework from Prime Minister Mark Carney’s government, and the first strategy of its kind since 2004. I compare it to a home insurance policy we signed two decades ago, tossed in the junk drawer with the Ikea Allen keys, and forgot about because we lived next door to the biggest fire department on Earth. Then the neighbour started threatening to move in. In this video, I break down what’s actually inside Canada’s national security strategy: Economic security and the eight sectors Canada wants to control for itself Defence spending and the path to NATO’s 5 per cent of GDP target by 2035 Public safety, infrastructure protection, and money laundering Intelligence, including plans to expand Canada’s role in the Five Eyes alliance with the US, UK, Australia, and New Zealand How Ottawa talks about the United States after annexation threats Why so much of this plan is a promise to write more plans What gives me cautious hope, including updates at least every four years and national security as a standing item at First Ministers’ Meetings If you care about Canadian sovereignty, Canada US relations, Canadian defence policy, or what Ottawa is actually planning while the headlines are elsewhere, this one’s for you. Subscribe for more plain-language breakdowns of Canadian politics, policy, and identity. And tell me in the comments: should Canada keep sharing intelligence with the United States? #Canada #CanadianPolitics #NationalSecurity #PlanForAStrongerCanada #MarkCarney #CanadaUS #FiveEyes #CanadianSovereignty #NATO #DefenceSpending #Ottawa #LetsJustReadTheGoddamnedThing --- πŸ† Get exclusive weekly Behind the Scenes videos and more by joining this channel! https://www.youtube.com/todmaffinvideo/join πŸ“° NEWSLETTER https://newsletter.todmaffin.com βœ… MY LINKTREE: https://links.todmaffin.com β˜• Like my stuff? β€” Buy me a coffee https://support.todmaffin.com πŸ¦‹ Follow me on Bluesky β€” https://bsky.app/profile/todmaffin.com πŸ”— Contact my team β€” https://contact.todmaffin.com
