That was pretty early in my service. Over the years, I heard that same basic thing several times. If we "just attack" Iran, they will retaliate and hold the world as economic hostages. And, that's exactly what they've done. This is why the military has said "all or nothing" and POTUSes were scared.

I can't remember who asked the question... I was at CENTCOM commander's residence (MacDill) with a group. Informal event, Cognac/Cohiba kind of deal and someone said something about attacking Iran. And we all got a lecture about how it would have to be "all or nothing" (invasion) due to strait.

Ants may be smart in their own way, but they know nothing about the universe outside of their environment. If an ant could talk and it had a conversation with Einstein about Unified Field Theory, it would say "I found God!" We will be that ant. We can't fathom the knowledge it will have.

When I use the term "God Intelligence", I'm not talking about a supernatural force. I mean a man-made intelligence so far beyond us that the gap between it and Einstein would be larger than the gap between Einstein and an ant. That's what Elon is seeking. If created, we'd stand no chance against it.

A man was once studying physics related to space and discovered nuclear magnetic resonance in solids and liquids. Years later, that science crossed a frontier and other scientists used it to create the MRI, maybe the most important invention of 20th Century. So yes, studying nature leads to cures!

As far as gain-of-function research, I think it's important. For starters, it teaches us what nature is capable of. And when we know what nature is capable of before nature creates it... that gives us an upper-hand in fighting it. Also, we can discover potential cures for uncured diseases.

Nature wants to kill us. It makes things to achieve goal. It's not actually conscious of course, but everything in nature has a lot of ways to kill things and make new life. That's just how it works. He'll claim anything new to us is lab made. Next he'll claim scientists are manufacturing sunburn.

The bacteria that causes lyme disease is old, practically ancient. It existed long before Europeans arrived in North America. Researchers have done genome studies on this stuff. Maybe the Vikings made it in their bio lab. Who knows.

Maybe you think you do, but I think their hate was a little more 'solid' than ours. My grandfather fought in Europe. In the 50s he moved to a town with a building that has two swastikas in the brickwork. It pre-dates Nazis, but he didn't ask. He saw it and just beat the store owner, nearly to dead.

Spot on. Same experience--both now & back then. I was just talking abt it w/ my daughter--the identity aspect, & how it isn't there today. I also often reflect on how when I was mid/high school, there were garage bands about every 3rd house & they played at parties, etc. Everyone was about music.

The Ukrainian Gov needs to abandoned any gov buildings/offices still in use and move all gov functions to other locations. Russia is going to attack the Verkhovna Rada building (Ukrainian Parliament). It's a matter of time. Both countries out of air defense. Both have plenty of offensive capability.
