This evening I fashioned a new spring for the line spacing lever for this 1937 Hermes Baby. Wow! Who knew you could just make a spring, but I did, using spring wire (naturally) and jewlery pliers.
This is a big improvement, but I still feel that thepplaten[sic] could be better. It is too hard.
There is also a bit of a grinding noise from under the carriagg[sic].
It's not too noticeable, but I wonde r (aha, a carriage skip, right on cue) if it could be creating any damage.

Typewriter progress. No more fading tops of letters.

Since yesterday, I have figured out how to adjust the paper bale spring, through trial and error. I have also found the four screws that adjust the height at which the slugs hit the platen to print the characters--right to rise, left to lower-- for lowercase letters, anyway. It might be the other way around for caps; I'm not sure.
I'm pretty happy with the printing adjustment-- the letters are no longer faded at the top. WOOHOO!.[sic]
I have begun a YouTube playlist to share details or my work. Perhaps it can help another lost 1937 Baby owner.

I never thought I’d live to see the day the Canadian federal government championed French language laws and The Gazette trumpeted it.
I'm VERY excited because a couple of weeks ago I bumbled into removing a part of my typewriter you are not. meant. to. remove. thereby unleashing days and days of Spring Drama. Several handmade tools and a tetanus shot later, I GOT THE SPRINGS BACK IN! I am a golden god.
