Professional science writer. Unprofessional novelist. Mom with half an empty nest. Insomniac. She/her. That is not me in the picture.

I can't believe I missed metaphor day! 😂 Sunday is the queen of metaphors. I had way too many to choose from but here ya go ... #LitHodgepodge #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #WriteSky

The scenery is post-apocalyptic, and the weather is Sacramento Valley hot. Nothing grows here, not so much as a determined little weed. I’ve seen weeds pushing through concrete in the real world, which means this place is more dead than a parking lot.
A craggy ditch stained with long, slobbery streaks of dried gray sludge runs parallel to where I’m walking. Since I’m not currently being attacked, I decide to check it out.

#LitHodgepodge 14 Figurative language allows words to expand their meaning beyond what’s on the page (magic!). Used well, these sorts of moments can really linger with the reader. Share a snip that uses simile, metaphor, or personification effectively! #WritingCommunity #WritingPrompts #WriteSky

An October Prompt Game of Miscellaneous Proportions

WEDNESDAY WORDSMITHS

[Graphic of a woman with a thoughtful expression, holding a quill, with paper on her desk in front of her and small cherub and demon figures at either side]

Prompt:
14 | Post and discuss a snip that makes good use of simile, metaphor, or personification.

[Graphic of a talking crow]
Simile is a comparison of two things using “like” or “as.” Metaphor is more direct, equating one thing to another. Personification gives human qualities to non-human things. All three are examples of figurative language—words that go beyond their literal meaning to make a powerful impression.

THURSDAY THRIFTED THERAPY

[Graphic of an old-timey bearded man sitting and leaning his arm against a barrel with a tiny frog crawling up its side]

Prompt:
8 | Answer one (or more) of these “would you rather” questions as your character:
🪦 Would you rather know when or how you’re going to die?
🧠 Would you rather have a perfect memory or be able to forget anything you wanted at will?
⏳ Would you rather time travel to the past or future?
💔 Would you rather never be able to show emotions or never be able to hide them?

[Graphic of talking crow]
“Would you rather” is a classic icebreaker which I doubt requires explanation. Surely you’ve been asked at some point whether you would rather fight 100 duck-sized elephants or one elephant-sized duck? If you chose the latter, you are clearly unacquainted with very many ducks.

MONDAYS WITH MARCEL

[Black & white picture of Marcel Proust, a man of the fin de siècle who had dark hair, sleepy eyes, and a dark mustache, sitting with his elbow propped on the back of his chair and looking pensive]

Prompt:
5 | Answer as one or each of your characters (as well as yourself, if you wish!):
What is your idea of perfect happiness?

[Graphic of a talking crow]
The Proust Questionnaire is a set of questions popularized by French writer Marcel Proust. Victorians answered these questions in parlor games, and modern interviewers now often use them. They can also be a great character development tool!

Okay, #WritingCommunity let's discuss misbehaving characters. When your character does something you didn't plan for them to do, do you rethink the scene? Let them take the reins or rein them in? Or take it as a sign that your character has gained consciousness?? 😆 #WritingPrompts #LitHodgepodge

Prompt:
2 | The cast of your book got sucked into the screen! In which show or film would they feel most at home? Or which one would be most entertaining to see them in?

[Graphic of a talking crow]
Personally, I wouldn’t mind joining the cast of “What We Do in the Shadows.” Guillermo would take excellent care of me, Colin and I would have much to discuss, and I do believe I’ve a solid plan to steal Laszlo’s witch-skin hat.

Since I'm in Hadrian mode I'll regale everyone with another snip of Hadrian being an asshole. Here he is having a matter-of-fact talk with Dainn about Dainn's upcoming death. #WIPSnips #WIP #AmWriting #WritingPrompts #Writers #Writing #WritingCommunity #WriteSky #SciFi #ScienceFiction #SFF

Hadrian stood up, stretching. “If it helps you make peace, Riven cried when I told her. Well, she more than cried. She screamed and threw things at me. A couple of them were things I liked, too.” He laughed. “She might think you’re Antony, otherwise I don’t know why she would fucking care so much.”
That didn’t help at all. The idea that Riven would grieve for him, the way she’d grieved for Antony … that made Dainn's whole body ache. “When?” he asked.
“I don’t know, two or three days? Why? You want to get your affairs in order? You don’t have any affairs.”
“It’s nice to know the date of one’s execution.”
   Hadrian yawned. “I suppose.”
