I mean igniting the 3/4 of a million commercial vehicles here there's just shy of 2.5milion cars in use here. And those cars currently consume 75 square kilometers of space while isle. That's basically half the entire land of the county of Dublin, just being used by stationary cars
@fingalpimpernel.bsky.social
But even if we assume that 20800 vehicles are just small family cars if you laid them out bumper to bumper you get just past Dunleer. You would need a 4 lane carriageway just to lay out all those vehicles to Dublin city bumper to bumper
To put this in context, since each of those vans are about 5.5*2m, the amount of parking consumed by that one household is 42m2, or the entire floor space of a large two bed house in that estate. There's 1.5 success per home in that estate, this household is consuming 3x it's fair share & then some
That's the minimum by the way because census only counts cars up to 3, it's "4 & above" then. And yes I've met people who had 5 vehicles. Oh, and no driveway. And 3 of them were large work vans.
In the 2022 census there's about 16400 holes in Swords. But there are at least 20800 cars. In fact there are so many cars that to create a car Park large enough for just them would consume the land needed for 90-100 football pitches...
“We need an Ozempic for cars. They are growing at a phenomenal rate, wreaking havoc on roads, squeezing out smaller vehicles and endangering pedestrians. Like ever-hungry teenagers, cars in Europe are growing on average a centimetre wider every year.” Don’t repeat North America’s mistake, Europe.
From Viviana Zelizer’s Pricing the priceless child (1985) “Children cannot obtain space and can lose rights to what they have when others demand more, so children suffer…the new 20thC rules for urban outdoor space, designed by adults for their convenience, constricted the public life of children.”
I'll go with Skenazy's headline - "If you want your kids to thrive this summer, don’t just turn off their phones – open your front door, too" - but not this: "the original experience blocker is fear". Blaming parental fear avoids big questions about cars, hostile public space, and austerity.
We asked for traffic calming, not alternating gridlock or qualifying laps.🚦 Rat-running brings #pollution, #stress, & #safety risk to our #community. A safe home environment matters. Last week marked 1 year of peaceful footpath demos - this week our last before a change up! Watch this space 👀

a reminder that the much-hyped new e-scooter regulations have not yet taken effect. it's almost as if existing laws were sufficient and the Gardaí could have simply been enforcing them all along
Over 160 e-bikes and e-scooters were among the items that have seized during Tuesday's day of action among gardaí in Dublin. jrnl.ie/7122443
How about window cleaning kit (including ladder) on a bike?
I'm actually more impressed by the "longtail on a kayak" part than by the "kayak on a longtail" part 😆
Like there's definitive connection between heavy congestion & hyper car ownership but the people who actually endure the worst are ironically those who live in the area with the lowest levels of car ownership
Like levels of walking and public transport usage by far the highest in areas with restrictive parking. Shocking level of hyper car ownership in outlying areas with a shocking 23% in one estste owning 3, 4 or more cars. These are also the biggest moaners about congestion
Going through the 2022 census for car ownership and committing data again and results still what I originally thought, unrestrictive parking = more cars. Town center actually has far fewer cars, parts with apartments (& thus 1 per home) lowest of all.
Just an observation but if there were no such thing as red lights I'd have gotten to work in 1hr 5m this morning. 10m extra extra waiting at lights
First, you tell me to get a hobby; now it's an “appropriate hobby”.
Apropos to nothing, dead men can't sue you for coming forward about the sexual harassment you experienced from them. #speirghorm
The whole thing, as first person account of “anti-Zionism” blending with paranoid antisemitic conspiracy theory, is grimlyfamiliar from radical left although reporting of him as ex neo-Nazi frames it as rightwing pathology. www.thecrewkerneman.com/inside-the-m...

Interesting passage in the mea culpa on antisemitism from Tory council candidate at centre of selection row, supporting the view - fiercely denied by most on left at the time - that Corbyn was a magnet drawing antisemitic cranks into Labour.

Almost *everything* you see in this format, whether infinite power cubes or solar powered houses for the homeless that fold out of suitcases or French "bread libraries" for the poor is liberal catnip bullshit by content farms. Stop being idiots. Thank you.
Glass half full/half empty: I'm thrilled to see the season opening for the Irish National Symphony Orchestra is already sold out -- Tara Erraught singing in Mahler's 2nd 'Resurrection' symphony 🤩 -- take THAT, classical music naysayers! But pissed off that I didn't order tickets in time 😩

I mean also surely there's other causes and people's who deserve 1.2m?
Maybe a bit more transparency around this story would help. 25k for a non EU student seems to fall well short of the money required to spend a year here including fees which are not cheap at UCD. Perhaps trying to spread the funding too thinly?
The cat has found the only closed door in the house and started to shout at it.
Don't disagree but most lay people would see this as a bike
AGS Louth is the latest. No e-bikes in these photos. And they say ‘one person detected pulling wheelies on a surron e bike ‘ - a quick Google tells me a Surron is an electric dirt/motor bike 🤷♂️ www.facebook.com/permalink.ph...
