All the way from eastern Scandinavia: a migrant Greenish Warbler at Sumburgh Head, Shetland yesterday evening in very much anticipated early autumn weather of rain and easterly airflow. #BirdingScotland #UKbirding #RareBirdsUK #Birds #UKWildlife

Risso's Dolphins here in Shetland on Monday inc. two individuals Floppy and Clip. Floppy has a collapsed dorsal fin and Clip (at 20s) is so called because of the indent on the dorsal fin. First 📷 in 2014 with photo ID allowing us to track subsequent movements. #MarineLife #MarineMammals #UKWildlife
Not exactly great 'moth-ing' weather of late here in Shetland but another stunning Burnished Brass (left), True Lovers Knot (top right) and one of several Gold Spots (lower right) have been very welcome visitors to our garden. #mothsmatter #teammoth
The sad sight of Gannet chick in a nest at Noss NNR, Shetland containing masses of discarded fishing net. Gannets already face enough threats so the news today that NatureScot REFUSED the licence for the annual Guga hunt on Sula Sgeir is very welcome. #BirdingScotland #UKbirding #UKWildlife
PUFFLING!!! Some great views of 'Pufflings' at Sumburgh Head this week including this individual taking its first wing stretches outside its burrow yesterday evening watched by mum or dad! #BirdingScotland #UKbirding #Birds #UKWildlife
Enjoyed some lovely displays of Bog Pimpernel out in the damper margins of the west Mainland of Shetland last week. #wildflowers #ukwildlife
Saddened by the news our friend Bill Oddie has passed away. We spent many happy days birding with Bill on his beloved Fair Isle and here in Shetland and his books in the 1980s inspired us and a generation of young birders. Since then he has inspired millions to appreciate nature. A true legend.
PUFFLINGS!!! Wonderful to see several young Puffins at their burrow entrances at Sumburgh Head, Shetland yesterday. It won't be long before these bundles of fluff and feather head away from our shores to spend the next couple of years at sea. #BirdingScotland #UKbirding #Birds #UKWildlife
Mother and calf Orcas... The beautiful sight of female '152' from the '27s' pod and her calf born in Autumn 2024 heading south off Sumburgh Head, Shetland just over ten days ago. #MarineLife #MarineMammals #CetaceansUK #UKWildlife
Lovey to watch this BASKING SHARK off St. Ninian's Isle. Shetland yesterday evening. Estimated to be around 6 metres in length using Fulmar wing spans in pics and video as measuring aids! 🦈 #MarineLife #UKWildlife #Shark
Not what I was expecting to see in our at garden at Hillwell, Shetland today - a male Hawfinch! Only a handful of previous Shetland July records exist. #BirdingScotland #UKbirding #Birds #UKWildlife
A stunning Burnished Brass from our Shetland garden actinic yesterday. A scarce immigrant to Shetland and just about annual here since the first record in 1997. #mothsmatter #teammoth
ORCA CALVES: a short video from last 'super' Sunday - surely the undoubted highlight of our ninth consecutive @shetlandwildlife.bsky.social 'Ultimate Shetland' trip! #MarineLife #MarineMammals #CetaceansUK #UKWildlife
Over the moon to have found this migrant Honey Buzzard heading over our Shetland garden on Sunday evening - the second 'HB' to have been at 'ours' this spring / summer! #BirdingScotland #UKbirding #RareBirdsUK #Birds #UKWildlife
Reason 14,876 why I love my job as a guide for @shetlandwildlife.bsky.social - sitting on the cliffs at Sumburgh Head with a Puffin keeping us company as we sat waiting for Orcas to swim by yesterday afternoon.
An amazing start to our @shetlandwildlife.bsky.social 'Ultimate Shetland' trip with incredible views of Orcas as they headed south from Noss to Sumburgh. Delighted to see two known calves in the pod with their mothers - but from differing matrilines. #MarineLife #MarineMammals #UKWildlife
20 YEARS AGO TODAY Hugh photographed and documented the now famous '27s' Orcas for the very first time. At that time back in July 2006 there were four individuals in the pod... #MarineLife #MarineMammals #CetaceansUK #UKWildlife
Atlantic Puffin heading out to sea against the backdrop of the spectacular Noss cliffs. An amazing trip with glass-calm seas and thousands of seabirds enjoyed by our 'Ultimate Shetland' group. #BirdingScotland #UKbirding #Birds #UKWildlife
A little bit of aerial video of the Atlantic White-sided Dolphins that graced Freester in the east Mainland of Shetland yesterday. Lovely to see quite a few calves in the pod. #MarineLife #MarineMammals #CetaceansUK #UKWildlife
Wonderful to watch a pod of c20 Atlantic White-sided Dolphins off Freester in the east Mainland of Shetland this afternoon. Here's two of them... #MarineLife #MarineMammals #CetaceansUK #UKWildlife
Fabulous views of a couple of pods of Risso's Dolphins in Mousa Sound, Shetland early on Sunday evening and lovely to see so many calves. #MarineLife #MarineMammals #CetaceansUK #UKWildlife
Mottled Rustic: first-ever Shetland record. Delighted to find this in the garden actinic trap here at Hillwell earlier this morning! #mothsmatter #teammoth #ukwildlife
Female Ghost Moth from the MV trap here at Hillwell, Shetland this morning. #mothsmatter #teammoth #UKWildlife
Footage from our fabulous Friday watching ORCAS here in Shetland. We followed them for several hours (from land) as they slowly made their way south from Bressay to Mousa. Great to see the calf born in late 2022 with its mother 'Vaila' - the matriarch of the '27s' pod. #MarineMammals #UKWildlife
White-billed Diver - the movie! Enjoy a minute of footage of this stunning bird filmed off West Burrafirth, Shetland last week. #BirdingScotland #UKbirding #RareBirdsUK #Birds #UKWildlife
Summer solstice at Mousa Broch as we awaited the arrival of Storm Petrels just before midnight in the 'Simmer Dim' light. A truly magical evening experienced by our 'Ultimate Shetland' group and thanks to our friends and associates at The Mousa Boat. #SummerSolstice #BirdingScotland #UKWildlife
ORCAS! What a way to round off our fifth consecutive 'Ultimate Shetland' tour! Fabulous views for guests and guides of four of '27s' pod off the south Mainland yesterday evening. I'm not sure we could have written the script any better. #MarineMammals #UKWildlife 📸 by @hughharrop.bsky.social
Lovely views of this Marsh Warbler at Sumburgh Quarry yesterday. The warmth of the 'silage tyres' there attracts lots of invertebrates and this bird fed actively among them, occasionally bursting into song! No jokes about drive-through dining please...🙈 #BirdingScotland #UKbirding #UKWildlife
Super views of this Red-necked Phalarope at Loch of Funzie, Fetlar, Shetland today for our 'Ultimate Shetland' group. Pic by guide Mick.
