This picture says a thousand words. Recording a deadly book duel for Joe Haddow @schmotime and BOOK OFF! with Charlie Higson ... I definitely look like the grown up in the room in this pic. Not sure what was just said but there was a horn on the table which someone may have tooted...

Time for a cup of tea and a shortbread biscuit at the Chiswick Book Festival after a morning event at the new Bradfield Lit Fest in Essex. A busy day. I'm thinking chocolate when I get home. A lot of it.

A talk yesterday evening in beautiful Winchester... I had time for a wander. I learned a lot about Alfred the Great, King of the West Saxons, King of the Anglo-Saxons and one of the founders of the Kingdom of England.

An excellent evening at Oxford University at the @sthildasoxford crime fiction weekend, presenting a lecture on Bond Villains with Abir Mukherjee @radiomukhers ... As you can see, we made an effort to dress for the occasion, complete with props.

horoughly enjoying the new James Bond novel KING ZERO by Charlie Higson ... Everything you'd want from a Bond book: action, intrigue, exotic locations and proper baddies... plus one of the coolest covers of the year.

Came across this very sci-fi sculpture today at Maynooth University, Ireland while speaking at the Historical Novel Society conference ... Looks like a time machine, which seems wholly appropriate for a history festival!

Ddirect from Theakston's Old Peculier Crime Writing Festival @harrogatefestivals a special episode of The Book Club ... I'm up first, talking about Q, Daniel Craig's suits, and Jaws as a vacuum cleaner salesman... Murderously good fun! Listen here: www.bbc.co.uk/sounds/play/...

I'm at the beautiful Colchester Library for the @essexbookfest ... Ben, the lovely librarian, asked if I'd like a cup of tea. I said I'd rather have a massive bar of chocolate...Like Willy Wonka he magically produced one... Hopefully I won't eat it all and be sick before my talk.

When I was young many of my favourite books had the puffin logo (Puffin is the children's imprint of Penguin Books). Today, I saw a puffin in the wild for the first time. I was tempted to put on my David Attenborough voice... I resisted.

A full house at Shetland Noir for a thorough grilling by the ever warm and generous Ann Cleeves ... I may have wandered off topic once or twice but a stern look was enough to make me behave. Almost behave.

Currently at the Hay Festival in a sweltering Hay-on-Wye. Speaking later! Hay is one of the world's largest literary festivals and yet it takes place in a small and picturesque Welsh market town. Somehow they accommodate a huge influx of enthusiastic book lovers from all over the globe. Incredible!

This is rather cool... Turning up to catch a train and seeing my book on a poster at the station (and on the train!)... And if you haven't read it yet, let this poster persuade you... Small town murder mystery featuring Q from the James Bond franchise. Go on, live a little... geni.us/quantumofmen...

1/2 - People often ask me: what was the book that inspired you to write? Well, it was this. Guard! Guards! by the late, great Sir Terry Pratchett. Came across it aged 15 in a library. Decided to write my own comic fantasy aged 17 and send in to agents...
