I think this Instagram Reel is giving me new language to describe one additional reason handing your creativity over to AI is unideal— “do you really want to consistently settle for the most mid execution of your idea, or do you want to push for the part that is exceptionally more your style?”

They’re everywhere - shop windows, supermarket noticeboards and on your feeds. What used to be a quaint word doc print-off for your local event is now an AI-fied flyer, likely with *that* typeface and probably looking altogether a bit too shiny. But why do all AI flyers look the same? @OversetText is on the case. #INTwithRamR #ItsNiceThat

As we come ever closer to the end of the Hugo Awards voting period, a reminder: no matter which work you believe deserves to win the Best Poem category, just casting your vote sends a strong message for the value of the category.
Hugo Awards voting is still open until August 8th! Whether you're already deep in the voter packet or haven't even glanced at the nominees yet, please read and vote for the works in the Best Poem category and support speculative poetry as a core element of genre! www.lacon.org/hugofinalists/
on a less comic note: if the film press doesn't ever run a single piece about how an original IP with a Black lead that is simultaneously high-concept and incredibly dramatic came about on the tail end of both the writer/director and the lead being shafted by Marvel, I will be quite livid

I am only now seeing this otherwise staid and empty trailer but the initial premise that there is a Purge day but it's only for single people to have sex is... you know... far too dystopian to just drop a romcom about two people Looking For Something More in the middle of

my brain has been kicking my brain's ass this week because I had an idea for an essay after one of the latest AI-in-fiction dramas and then *I missed two other AI-in-fiction dramas* and then an essay came pouring out of me and I think I only got four hours of sleep last night so anyway hold this
no Wonder Man season 2. no Blade. and a long bet on Doomsday made essentially by jingling keys in the final trailer. i am so tired.
Wonder Man showrunner says scheduling issues aren't to blame for cancellation
Wonder Man's cancellation was Marvel and Disney's decision, not Andrew Guest's or Destin Daniel Cretton's

There is a huge difference between engaging with art via critique, and simply feeling superior to art. Trope-spotting is a particularly noxious form of faux criticism. Tropes are not innately good or bad; they are simply tools. You aren’t a genius for noticing that your carpenter uses a hammer.
if I ever taught film criticism lesson one would be “you being smarter than the movie is not interesting to anyone”
so I've only recently learned that not only was there a tornado warning at Gen Con but some actually dangerous weather stuff actually did touch down?? I hope everyone over there has been keeping safe and that no major damage has been done
You know this is my jam. It is also part of why I'm attached to poetry being more deeply explored in genre: there is so much yet to be observed and valued about the linkages between the epic as genre, the verse novel as bridge between prose & verse, the hip-hop album as literature, and more...

Non-writer publishing industry professionals NEED to internalise that the AI problem has not proven that a majority of writers are even tempted to apply AI to their process, but it *is* proving at breakneck speed that the industry hasn't gotten less racist even after those damn post-BLM pledges.
This discussion on Exploring Strange New Selves will also star Hugo Award finalists @jenniferbrozek.bsky.social and @therisingtithes.bsky.social !

For task completion I make the most granular list you have seen in your life. If the task is a draft, “open your laptop” is a list item. “Open Microsoft Word” is another list item. For initiation, I get up and move to a secondary location, which tells my body it’s time to work.

My problem is getting started, so I tell myself I’m just getting the object I need to do the task, or going to that room. That’s all. If it’s writing, I’m just going to get the laptop. Then I’m just going to open it. Then login. If it’s really bad, I ask my husband to bring it to me.

Role playing. I have two types of goblin that I pretend to be and that helps me get past the task initiation dysfunction. Trash Goblin takes garbage out as tribute to Lord Oscar. And then Word Goblin gets words down when I’m unmotivated.

I farm dopamine with reverse pomodoros: 25 minute break followed by 5 minutes of Thing I Don’t Want to Do. Sounds crazy, but if low dopamine is the problem, dopamine farming is the solution. Eventually I farm enough dopamine and Thing I Don’t Want to Do turns into Task I Really Want to Complete.

I shout two sentences, one after the other like a weird call to answer with just me playing both parts: I'm tired of this, grandpa! THAT'S TOO DAMN BAD.

It's probably very bad form that I have never actually watched any of Robert & Michelle King's legal dramas considering that The Good Wife is what they're known best for (BrainDead and Evil, however, are OUTSTANDING), but the very premise of this has my attention. And Mike Colter, of course.
